“Be sure to pick this one up when you want a sweet and sexy read with a dash of angst.ย  It will hook you from page one!” ~Under the Covers

I knew when I picked up this book it would go one of two ways, as it usually is with me and my love/hate relationship with new adult.ย  It would either be about immature characters that I would want to punch in the face, or it would be angsty and tear my hear out, leaving me loving every minute of it.ย  Instead, Monica Murphy was able to tell an enthralling story about two people with plenty of baggage, without making it as angsty as some other books I’ve read.ย  And I really liked that!

Drew is a college kid, rich family, football star, great grades.ย  He doesn’t go out partying like his teammates, he has no time for girls.ย  But he doesn’t have a good relationship with his father and stepmother, in fact, he hasn’t seen them for two years and now they want him to go back home for Thanksgiving break.ย  He needs a buffer.

So he “hires” Fable.ย  A barmaid at a local hangout, and a girl whom a lot of his teammates say they’ve hooked up with.ย  She’s from the wrong side of town and should take the money he’s offering to pretend to be his girlfriend in front of his family.

That in a nutshell is the idea of the story and from there so much happens.ย  But I’m not going to sit here and tell you what.ย  Just know that Drew and Fable are amazing characters.ย  Even though Drew is sexy as hell and I’d love to say MINE, my favorite in this story is actually Fable.

Yes, that’s her actual name.ย  Her mother has a drinking problem, as do all the men she brings home.ย  Fable tries to be the provider for the family, the example for her brother and the heavy hand that keeps him in line.ย  She hasn’t had an easy life.ย  College was never an option for her and she’s had to make the best of what she’s been given.ย  Never throwing in the towel and looking for a better way for herself.ย  She’s selfless and strong, even though it’s hurting her inside.ย  She’s also unapologetic and a free spirit.ย  A girl who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to say it or get it.

But enough of my crush on Fable.ย  Drew is pretty fabulous too.ย  He is broken.ย  And we quickly figure out the WHY he is.ย  Even though there wasn’t a lot of guessing on my part as to what happened in his past that made him how he is, I enjoyed the unfolding of it.ย  I even saw the little twist at the end coming when the knife was dug in deeper into his heart.

The author leaves us with a sort of cliffhanger and a hopeful ending that will have you rushing to read the next book right away.

ONE WEEK GIRLFRIEND is definitely a book I’d recommend.ย  In fact, I did just that as I was finishing up the book and a day later I get a message from that friend saying OMG I LOVED IT!ย  So be sure to pick this one up when you want a sweet and sexy read with a dash of angst.ย  It will hook you from page one!

  1. I heart Drew + Fable forever! Drew’s story nearly killed me. Didnt you jist hate Adele? I seriosuly felt murderous over her. Like if she were a real person and we met in an ally I would have killed that bitch. Glad you loved this book. MARSHMALLOW

    1. LOL We can probably take her together, lets go! Yeah she was beyond psycho. And then at the end when her “reasoning” comes out of the why she did that, just sick. And the MARSHMALLOW at the end …… Gahhhhhhhh

  2. Thanks for the review – I too have a love/hate relationship with both YA and NA books – it all depends on the character development and level of angst. I don’t really have a favorite in mind – hate when my mind goes blank- but One Week Girlfriend sounds like a book I need to add to my kindle.
