“…a suspense plot which had more holes then a block of Emmental and a romance that I just couldn’t get on board with.”
~ Under the Covers

So, I wasn’t such a big fan of this instalment of the Underground Kings series, maybe it was because it was one of the first books to stray away from the Mayson family, or maybe it was just because it was a dud. I’m more inclined towards the dud theory. I found this book a tad too ridiculous, you already have to suspend your disbelief quite hard for these books, but in Obligation my brain wouldn’t switch off and I just couldn’t enjoy it as much as I usually would.

I think part of the reason for this was because I didn’t really connect to either the hero or heroine and when I was reading it didn’t seem like they were connecting that much to one another either. Kai, the hero of the story you may recognise for his brief appearance in the first book of the series Assumption – a book I really liked – as did Myla, his wife. Myla wakes up one morning after her life has quite literally gone up in flames and finds herself married to Kai, a man she doesn’t recognise. That was my first what-the-hell moment, these two have no connection that she knows of and yet she doesn’t seem to react like a normal person when she wakes up married to him. This was just the first of many moments. All culminating into a suspense plot which had more holes then a block of Emmental and a romance that I just couldn’t get on board with. I almost felt like I was missing something, that there was a novella between the first book Assumption and this that I had missed which explains all the things that I seem to be missing.

Needless to say, I wasn’t impressed by this book. It is my first Aurora Rose Reynolds book that I haven’t enjoyed. But that doesn’t mean I am going to stop reading her books, I really liked the first book in this series and I am looking forward to starting the next book. But, if you haven’t read Reynolds before, I highly recommend that you don’t start with this one.spacer

  1. I’ve seen good reviews for her other books and was thinking about trying them but I won’t start here. Thanks.
