“Raphael is one HOT….not telling you what he is.” ~ Under the Covers

One of these days I’ll learn to read blurbs.  This story was previously publisher in the HAUNTED BY YOUR TOUCH anthology, which I’ve had in my TBR for a long while.  When short stories previously in anthologies get released individually, I feel it breaths new life into them and hopefully reach a bigger audience.  I wasn’t planning on getting to read the full anthology anytime soon but as soon as Jeaniene Frost published the individual novella I was all over it.

OK so back to the story.  NIGHT’S DARKEST EMBRACE is not a part of the Night Huntress series.  When I have an author boxed into their successful series, I sometimes struggle really getting into something different they write.  This was a bit like that for me.  It took me a while to make a connection with the characters.  I felt like I was going through the motions of reading it and not caring what happened one way or another.

However, it did pick up and captured my interest once I knew a bit more of what was going on in the world.  I find that this is an interesting world of Purebloods and Fallen Angels and Partial Demons.  In Nocturna you might not find everything you are used to in the human world and might even have to drink a warm beer.  I thought the fact that time stands still was interesting as well.  Our heroine, Mara, travels through both worlds and it’s hard for Nocturna people to gauge how long she was gone for.

Mara is looking for her cousin Gloria.  She thinks she knows who took her, among other girls and she’s looking for him.  They’re the Purebloods, she’s a partial demon.  And while she goes off investigation she puts her trust in the wrong places but finds a mate along the way.  Raphael is one HOT….not telling you what he is.

Overall, though, I think I didn’t fully connect with the story and can’t pinpoint the why.  Maybe it’s as simple as it wasn’t what I was expecting.  It is a different side from Ms. Frost and I’m glad that she’s stretching her writing into other stories.  Maybe this one could develop more and be a good idea to continue.

  1. That cover is so hot, all I want to do is stare at it…too bad all of its beauty will be lost on my Kindle keyboard-thanks for the heads up on this Francesca!

  2. Thanks for the great review! I’m actually really liking these “reissues” of novellas. Most of the time, I only like one or 2 stories in these anthologies or I only buy it b/c of one author so I feel like I’m wasting my money. I’ve been snapping up these novellas as they are released and for authors like this one that I haven’t read yet, it’s a good price to try them out.

  3. Well, at least the cover is better than Mencheres and Spade’s book. Not as hot as Once Burned, but pretty good

  4. I saw this one’s release announced and I would have made the same mistake you did- that it was a Night Huntress world story.

    I enjoyed your review, thanks!

  5. I love Jeaniene’s books…so this review is a good caution! I’ll still read it but maybe keep my expectations a little lower.
