“MY ONE AND ONLY totally sucked me in and gave me the ride of my life. I laughed. I cried. I swooned. I LOVED IT.” ~ Under the Covers

I was looking for a book that specifically was about a road trip so when I came across a Kristan Higgins book, I knew I had to read it. I’ve only read Higgins’ Blue Heron series so reading a standalone novel was either going to go very good for me or very bad. Not surprisingly, I fell in love with this book so much that it’s actually one of the better books I’ve read this year (even though it isn’t a new release).

Harper James has reached an age where she is looking to settle down. As a divorce attorney, she has made enough money that she feels like she can comfortably settle down with her long time boyfriend, Dennis. However when she springs the question to him, Dennis the firefighter is not as enthusiastic as she hoped for him to be. Added to that is the sting when she learns that her younger sister is going to get married in a couple of weeks….to her ex-husband’s brother, no less. Yes yes, talk about awkward.

Forced to make the trip for the wedding, the last thing Harper wants to do is be face-to-face with her ex. Everything seems to be fine until Nick and Harper are forced to spend some time alone together in his Mustang as they take a mini road trip home. While I generally enjoy Higgins book, MY ONE AND ONLY totally sucked me in and gave me the ride of my life. I laughed. I cried. I swooned. I LOVED IT.

Higgins’ humor in this one is spot on. It’s not over the top immature but gives just enough to have you cracking a smile or laughing out loud. But the combination of humor and those more serious, angsty moments are what really made this book stand out for me. Harper has her flaws but I don’t think it makes her any less imperfect. In fact, I ADORED her character and loved the second chance romance she has with Nick. If you haven’t read this book already, you really, really need to!

Favorite Quote:

“You asked why I couldn’t forgive you,” Nick said, very quietly, and I jumped a little. “It was because you were the love of my life, Harper. And you didn’t want to be. That’s hard to let go.”

  1. OMG I loved this book & I read it so long ago, I may need to do a reread. I own & have read all of Kristan’s books at least once, some multiple times. You really can’t go wrong with any of her books. The Next Best Thing is my all time favorite.
