I found this to be a bit of a lackluster read.

In Kathy M. Raylen’s Maid of Honor, Annalise is the personal maid of Princess Dierna, heir to the throne. Having grown up together, Annalise has found herself from time to time forced to play the role of her royal mistress. When once again called upon to take her mistress’ place at a tedious function, Annalise finds herself for the first time with the power to change not only her own circumstances, but of those around her. As the princess begins to disappear more and more frequently, Annalise is swept up by a world that she was always familiar with and yet has never truly been her own. However, with internal tensions rising in the kingdom, Annalise finds that the stakes of her true identity being discovered may be greater than she could have ever imagined.

I found this to be a bit of a lackluster read. The plot was predictable and both the world building and character development were lacking. In terms of character development, the only truly fleshed out character was our main POV, Annalise. Otherwise, we are introduced to a lot of characters in this book, but only get to know them on a surface level. Princess Dierna is supposed to play an important role in the story, but is absent for most of it thereby making it difficult to feel any sort of connection with or sympathy for what happens to her. In fact, I found even the love interest a bit one dimensional.

With regards to the world building, I found it odd that we meet several magical creatures in a seemingly mundane medieval inspired world. I would have liked more of an explanation of how they fit into the world and seen other magical aspects of the world if this was supposed to ultimately be a fantasy world.

Overall, this book wasn’t for me. I would recommend it to those either looking for a quick read or who think they would enjoy a story inspired by Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper.
