Review: Loving Mr. Daniels by Brittainy C. Cherry

This book has been on my radar for so many years. So when I was putting my list together for the Roundabout Challenge, I wanted to read it and finally see what the hype was all about. It’s always a book highly recommended for student/teacher romances and this was also my first time trying this popular author.

As it often happens to me when I read older books, it did have the feel of a lot of new adult novels from a few years ago and there were things about the story that I definitely enjoyed. But as much as I thought it was cute at times, it also felt underwhelming.

LOVING MR. DANIELS is a bittersweet story about loss and heartache from beginning to end. Our heroine, Ashlyn, is dealing with the death of her twin sister and going to live with her father thinking her mother didn’t really want her there anymore because she wasn’t the favorite daughter. With the whole situation with both her parents, Ashlyn felt completely disconnected from reality. It seems to me at least with her mother she should’ve been able to have an indication something was going on and in the end I thought she was a bit too self-centered to not notice the feelings of people around her.

Maybe this is why I didn’t connect with her as much as I see others around. Unexpected or tragic death doesn’t make a story deep or heartbreaking in an of itself for me. It’s what you do with that. How it affects the story. For me, a lot of that was gratuitous and I wished the heroine would’ve really grown more from her experiences to make them have a definitive impact. Had she not met the hero, I’m not even sure she would be in a better place.

But even as it seems I have some complaints, I did enjoy the story. It reminded me a bit too much of SLAMMED by Colleen Hoover, a book I loved and I think did the whole subject overall better. All that being said, I’m not so sure I’ll continue reading this author in the future.
