“That emotional connection is something that Ms. Cullinan excels at and this was another great example of that. ”
~ Under the Covers

You know there’s a wave of m/m authors trying to write college romance and some do it well, others miss the mark.  But there is one thing that I keep coming back to time and time again.  Heidi Cullinan can write any story she sets out to because there is one thing you’re always guaranteed to get, plenty of emotion!  LOVE LESSONS was just that for me.  I connected.  I cared about these two characters.

Kelly is young, a bit of a romantic, and not used to yet with the concept of being out.  Coming from a small town of small minded individuals, starting his college experience and finding some acceptance was great.  He was also looking for his one true love.  That one true love he plans on giving his virginity to.  It would seem as if his out and proud and a bit of a manwhore roommate Walter would be the last choice for this.  But then they become friends.

That slow build of their friendship, the way Walter can start to coax Kelly out of his shell, and how he comes to care about all the little details that would make Kelly comfortable (and healthy!)… I ate that stuff up!  That emotional connection is something that Ms. Cullinan excels at and this was another great example of that.  I forgot about how young Kelly actually is, how naive he can come across as times, or about the way Walter was handling the issues in his own family life.  Maybe some of these things would’ve otherwise bothered me.  But it just all felt natural.

I don’t know why I waited so long to pick this one up since I’ve had it on my TBR since it came out, but I’m happy it was a pick for me in the monthly challenge to kick my butt in gear.  Now to catch up on the series.
