“This book focuses more on the romance and the relationship between these two, leaving aside the danger and suspense element in the back burner.” ~ Under the Covers
I had seen a lot of hype when this book first came out. At that time it didn’t seem like a subject matter I wanted to tackle. But then I read other books with contract killers and bad guys and sort of developed an interest. I was intrigued to see what this duo had to offer because I’ve read Clare in the past and enjoyed her books (under a different pen name) but never read Frederick. Lets just say this was… interesting.
It’s not full of the danger and questionable morals I’ve come to associate with this type of book. Instead we have a contract killer who falls in love (or obsesses) over a strange girl who lives above his next mark. He finds himself tracking her every move when he should be tracking his next victim. Until he can’t help it but make a move and make her his.
Daisy was the off thing in this story for me. She was raised completely sheltered by her father. After her mother was killed, her father went into “lockdown” on fear that they would be targetted next. And that very fear was the reason she wasn’t allowed to experience life. Until she runs away from home and decides to live life to the fullest. I can’t say I ever liked her character. She was making me crazy at times and it just way too long for her to come to terms with her new life and have some common sense.
Nikolai, although sexy, was too overbearing and stalkerish for my taste. But he did keep me interested in the story.
This book focuses more on the romance and the relationship between these two, leaving aside the danger and suspense element in the back burner. Once the ending was near, the suspense and action kicked up a bit. But I wish it would’ve been integrated better in the story.
