Review: Grime and Punishment by Z.A. Maxfield

While not my favorite of ZAM’s books, GRIME AND PUNISHMENT still holds a lot of appeal. It’s quite a different take that I haven’t seen on M/M but still ansty and good regardless. ~ Under the Covers

Z.A. Maxfield gets some bonus marks for writing a series about a job cleaning up crime scenes. You don’t see it often and that’s one of the things that caught my attention in the first place. This book felt a little different in terms of tone from the usual ZAM book. There’s still some great dialogue and fun moments, but ZAM also focuses on secrets as well as some far more darker emotions that you will see when you read the book.

Jack Masteron is an ex-firefighter who suffered from an injury. He is now cleaning up crime scenes. He gets a call from Detective Huntley that his first love, Nick Halloran has committed suicide. Instead of mourning that, Jack believes that cleaning up the mess will help him find closure. Why? I have no idea, but it opens up a can of worms that makes for a good story.

As Jack does this morbid task, he meets Ryan Holloran, Nick’s cousin and this is really where the torment lies. The resemblance is striking and takes Jack a minute to process what is in front of him. There’s a lot of strength in this book, but since it’s coming from a dark place, there is also a lot of time spent on trying to shred that pain until Jack finds it within himself to love again.
