“FREE FALLING is incredibly sexy, yes, but I wanted more from it.  I felt there wasn’t enough to show us a true connection between these characters and it ended up feeling like insta love.”
~ Under the Covers

Where should I start with this.  This is my first time officially reading S.E. Jakes, but I have read this author under two different pen names before.  I’ve even read and enjoyed her m/m stories under those.  So I thought this would be a logical transition and one I’ve been wanting to try for years.  But maybe I should’ve tried with something more full length because this, although it has good writing and was entertaining, just didn’t hit the mark for me.

Blue is a thief and Mick is an undercover agent.  They met years ago and were supposed to act on their attraction then, but Mick never showed up.  Now Blue is caught in the middle of an undercover op Mick is working and he risks blowing his cover to protect him.  This should sound perfect, right?  At least it would be the perfect setup for me.  But the execution is not what I wanted.

FREE FALLING is incredibly sexy, yes, but I wanted more from it.  I felt there wasn’t enough to show us a true connection between these characters and it ended up feeling like insta love.  Then there’s the sexy drug plot device.  It could just be that I’ve read too many of these books but I’ve become a hard judge of using the sex drug storyline and it has to be done well, not be an excuse to write sex scenes and in this book that’s what it felt like.  I don’t think the sex scenes even deepened the connection between these two because, well, I refer to my previous comment about the insta love.

Now, this doesn’t mean that I won’t be reading this author again.  I know from personal experience that I enjoy her work and I think in this case it was more of a it’s not you, it’s me.  This type of story just didn’t mesh with me.  But I will be sure to continue on and read more of her work.

  1. I pretty much had the same reaction. It helps a little on the lack of development stuff that I read the whole Hell or High Water series, but not much. I didn’t like the sex drug plot device, either.

  2. I was attracted to this cover and when I read the blurb I was excited….not so much anymore
