“This book was a melting pot of cliches, and a few commas short of the mark.” ~ Under the Covers
I am so conflicted with this. Let me start out by stating that I do not like writing bad reviews. I don’t go into a book wanting to hate it. On the contrary, when I see a book that is right up my alley, even when it’s an author I’ve never heard of, I jump in ready to enjoy it. Now, I know a lot of people think that if you don’t have something good to say, then don’t say anything at all. But you know why that’s wrong? Opinions can be different. And when all I find is praise, things like this can happen.
Back story here is that I purchased this book because I saw an author I absolutely love and adore pimping this out. Then I read the blurb and got all giddy and excited because it sounded like just my type of dark read. I even pushed aside everything else I “should” be reading and reviewing to get to read this right away. I was in the mood!
I can’t even begin to tell you all the things that made this not enjoyable. But lets start with some of the worst editing I’ve seen in a while. I mean, I’m not one of those that needs everything perfect and I let a lot of things go by. By no means do I start getting an itch if it’s not perfect. But the grammar and spelling mistakes happened so much that I could start feeling my blood boil. Things as simple as “i” instead of “I”, “too” instead of “to”, “then” instead of “than”. It made me want to grab a red marker and start making correction notes! And from there, there was just more of that. It really took away from the story.
But wait, then there’s the story! Where this could’ve been a great dark new adult story, it fell completely flat on its ass. The hero is a jerk, not even likeable. His connection and attraction to the heroine doesn’t make sense to me as there is no relationship development other than her bumping into him, then him running into her at a crime scene (yes, he’s a hit man remember?) where he’s doing his job and spares her life because he’s obsessed/infatuated. Then all of a sudden they are getting hot and heavy just days after that?
So while my brain couldn’t wrap itself around the fact that the HEA was believable due to the circumstances in the book (no spoilers here!)…the ending was even worst. Like a bad soap opera where things get so tangled and then big reveals happen that you can’t help but roll your eyes at it all. This book was a melting pot of cliches, and a few commas short of the mark.
I really couldn’t find one redeeming quality to this. No, not even the sex. And this makes me sad because I went in really wanting to like it!
