“These books feel big and they tackle some crazy intense mythology but I don’t think there’s anything that can outshine Taylor’s writing. ”
~ Under the Covers
This entire series has been a great adventure. I was a little hesitant in reading this last book because YA trilogies tend to worry me. I get scared that the ending will suck and that everyone dies. It’s happened before so that was part of the reason why I waited so long to read all the books at once.
I am glad to say that the ending isn’t bad in this one. There’s good resolution, but I do think there will be a couple small things that can put readers off. Luckily for me, I found it still enjoyable.
I think the biggest thing to address in this book is the fact that there’s a new character that is thrown into the mix. Eliza surprised me. I didn’t realize that so much of this book was going to be told from her POV. So I can totally understand when others say that they thought her character was thrown in almost as an afterthought to tie up loose ends because she wasn’t in any of the other books before. However, despite all that, I do think she offers greater insight into this world that wouldn’t have been possible if told from Karou or Zuzanna’s POV for example. So I don’t see her as a total waste of space. I guess I just wished that Taylor had put something of Eliza in the previous book, a hint or something, that would foreshadow her presence in this one. But she does have some good scenes in this book and I ended up really liking her.
The second biggest thing is probably the romance. Now I know so many people are wondering how Karou and Akiva are ever going to get together after everything they’ve been through, but I will say that Taylor does it in a very smart fashion. It didn’t really bother me that there were so many obstacles standing in their way. I almost expected that. I think if they got their HEA so easily within this book, it would almost be a letdown. Taylor draws it out, yes, but she finishes it out well too.
If you haven’t read this series, I would highly suggest trying it out. There is no other series I can compare this too and that goes to show just how unique this series is. These books feel big and they tackle some crazy intense mythology but I don’t think there’s anything that can outshine Taylor’s writing. Her voice is amazing and these books are beautifully written. I look forward to reading what Taylor has in store next.
