Review: Dead of Night by Jonathan Maberry

Several few years ago I had the pleasure of listening to Jonathan Maberry talk about his latest book (this book) and the research he did for it.  I was so intrigued by the premise and by Mr. Maberry’s personality I had to buy a copy to get signed.  A few years later I picked up another book by him.  And since then his books just accumulate and sit on my shelf in the hope one day I would try them.  I’ll admit I was a bit scared to try because I generally don’t mesh well with male authors’ writing.  There’s just something about the ones I’ve tried that I can never quite immerse myself in.  Well… that was not the case with Jonathan Maberry.  His writing is addictive.

While DEAD OF NIGHT is a zombie horror story and it’s basically the end of the world as we know it, there’s also something fun about the way he narrates this story.  Fast paced storytelling and great wit, DEAD OF NIGHT kept me turning the pages.

The plot is not the most complicated but it’s executed really well giving the reader different POV.  Yes, it’s horror but it’s also not exactly scary if that makes sense?  I think the way the story is delivered was the key to that.  It just felt like a really great, action-packed zombie movie.  I’m really glad I gave this book a shot and to have found a male author I can actually really enjoy.

I will warn you this ends in sort of a cliffhanger.  While I’m glad there’s another book at the same time I kind of wished it was a standalone.  That could be just me not having the vision for where the next story can go next.  But I’ll definitely be picking it up as soon as I finish the rest of the Maberry books I have on my shelves.
