This book reminds me of Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club only updated with a whole lot of family drama and a splash of Asian humour.  Of course, not depressing at all. Similar to JLC, there are multiple POVs which I enjoyed quite a bit. I enjoyed getting into the heads of these Crazy Rich Asians from different generations. The older generations, aka the blue bloods of Asia were especially interesting and entertaining.  Boy, they are ruthless, though I found myself rooting for the underdog. In this case, Rachel. An Asian-American who has fallen for Derek, who has a very traditional family. When I say traditional, I mean traditional in every sense and accepting someone like rachel is hard on them. Rachel’s journey to meeting them is quite an adventure.  You’d have to read this book to fully understand the drama of it all, but if you read the blurb or watch the trailer, you’ll get the gist of it.

Like I mentioned above, I enjoyed the drama, multiple POVs, and the romance in this book.  Do I recommend it? Yes. However, there may be a few things that others may be put off with.  First, there may be some who are not familiar with heavy Asian culture such as myself. But I was able to keep up with some humour due to similarities in my own (Filipino) culture/traditions.  There are some, almost an inside joke that only Asians might understand. I could be wrong, but that’s just my opinion. Next, and this did not dampen my opinion of the book, but I went in thinking this book was a funny read and expected laugh-out-loud moments.  However, it’s not as funny as I expected. I felt that some scenes or conversations were not intended to be funny, but because I’ve watched the trailer, I had to look at some scenes with a different eye. I suppose it was funny enough to make me smile, but not enough to laugh-out-loud.  Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed this book as an overall. It’s definitely not my typical genre, but it was a good palate cleanser.

This book was recommended to me a few years back, but I gave it a chance now due to the persuasive power of a girls night out event.  A bunch of my friends are planning to rent out a small theatre to watch the movie adaptation of this book.
