Review: Changeless by Gail Carriger

I cracked this book open with really high expectations because I absolutely adored the first book in the series.  CHANGELESS was a completely different read.  Some of it good and some of it a little slower than I wanted so ended up being disappointing.  I found myself getting distracted and losing interest a lot.

The plot is slow to come together, there’s a lot of information that isn’t freely shared and it makes for a situation that feels like we were spinning our wheels a lot.  I wanted Conall to be more open, but I also realize the way women are regarded in the times and the fact he needs to grow accustomed to his wife and being a good husband.  He could’ve made things a bit easier had he talked.  As much as the plot was really slow and uninteresting for 2/3 of the book, the last third when they are in Scotland was great.  This was really what saved the book for me and kept me wanting to move forward with the series.  That and because I genuinely like Alexia as a narrator.  She’s a lot of fun.

The things that first captivated me about this series where missing in this book.  Maybe it’s because of the fact that our main characters spend some time apart so their dynamic was not part of the story at all.  I can’t quite put my finger on what the problem was but this one wasn’t as fresh as the first.  I think the first book had a lot more romance but the romance isn’t what I found I needed here.  It’s just that the banter and the way Conall works with Alexia adds that fun element to the story and I would love to see them explore solving cases together even if their marriage and romance isn’t the focal point.  So maybe that’s what it was here.  I need the team and the side characters to all work together.

This is still, by far, one of the most enjoyable steampunk series I’ve read and I think a great fit in the genre for my reading taste.  I’m excited to continue reading.
