“Suzanne Wright seems to write great world building and I think that’s one of the best bases for a good paranormal story.”
~ Under the Covers

This is my second Suzanne Wright book and I’m jumping series.  I read the first in the Feral Sins and I thought it was mehhh, good but just ok.  So I thought instead of continuing that series I would try another one.  I picked up BURN and while I had some of the same issues as with the previous book I read, I also enjoyed this one a bit more.

This series is more about demons and our heroine finds that her “fated mate” in this case called an anchor is one of the most powerful demons in existence.  I was surprised by how much I liked Knox because he can come off strong.  But that goes without saying because of his position and power.  I was expecting to find Harper annoying or bland, and the surprise was that I actually liked her.

The thing that stands out about this book is the politics.  There’s a ton of politics and world building around that.  If you are into paranormal stories heavy on that as the main story arc and conflict, then you’ll enjoy this.  I find that intriguing but I wanted a better balance with the rest of the story.  It made for a boring story at times and made me want to skim some.

One thing I noticed too late after I had started reading this, is that the series centers around the two main characters in this book.  So we don’t get to see a new couple with each installment.  I am not sure I’m invested/interested enough to read 4 (so far?) books about Knox and Harper, and would’ve loved to see some  of the secondary characters in this one getting their own book so we could get to know them better.

In the end, this was an enjoyable read.  Suzanne Wright seems to write great world building and I think that’s one of the best bases for a good paranormal story.  I’ll have to think about continuing but most likely I’ll at least give book 2 a shot.

Favorite quote:

“I’ve told you over and over, I’m sorry and I hate that I’ve hurt you. What do you want me to do?”
She faced him. “Honestly? Stick your cock in a bee hive. Call me and let me know how that goes.”

About Suzanne Wright

I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing something, whether it was stories, poems, or even songs – though I can’t carry a tune. I only have one rule when I’m writing a book which is that it has to have a happy ending. Other than that, pretty much anything goes. I write stories that I would enjoy reading and then I just hope that others will enjoy them too.

I was born and raised in England where I live with my husband (a person who doesn’t judge me for hearing voices in my head – how often do you come across people like that?), and my two demanding children.
