Review: Breakaway by Avon Gale

I went into this book with two things in mind.  The fact that it sounded like a new adult hockey m/m story (which I’ve been looking for since HIM) and the fact that an author I love who also writes gay hockey players in her stories had mentioned liking this author and the fact this book came out.  So I went in expecting to like this, but wasn’t too thrilled with the result.

What I Liked:

The plot.  Yes, I think the storyline was cool and would’ve been something I really enjoyed had I connected more with the meat of the story.

Jared.  He’s portrayed as the bad boy older hockey player who never really made it big in his professional hockey player career.  I just thought he felt comfortable in his own skin and didn’t let that or the fact he’s bisexual drag him down.  He was just very genuine and I really enjoyed him.

The side characters.  These were fun to read about as well and I see where the author can have room to play with at least another storyline coming up real quick.

What I Didn’t Like:

The main character being painfully awkward.  It just got to the point that it stopped being cute and got on my nerves.  Maybe this is just me but he didn’t make sense half the time and his ramblings weren’t that cute or funny.

How the fact he was gay and how his parents handled that aspect of their sons’ lives was addressed.  We are led to believe that everything was done through assumptions.  He never came out officially to his parents, but they did catch him kissing a guy.  So the assumption is that they are not supportive of him because he’s gay due to that.  It seems unrealistic that there wouldn’t be more of a discussion and just assume you know how the parents feel.  Then the parents not pushing for a talk about it seems odd as well for as long as it went on.  I don’t want to spoil this aspect of the story, but by the time we get to the end and see the truth behind this situation, I just didn’t buy it.

The narration.  Choppy at best.  I think that’s one of the reasons I kept getting pulled out from my reading flow.  It’s because there was no flow to how this story is told.  One minute we are here and the next we are in a different scene.

The sex.  Just left something to be desired for me.

The subplot with Zoe.  [spoiler]It felt we got this added tease about maybe a physical attraction to Zoe and the fact that Jared is bisexual, and even hinted at a threesome, and then it all fizzles out.  So it felt unnecessary for it to be there at all! Ugh![/spoiler]

All in all, this is probably not a series I will continue.  I did finish it, so there is that.
