Thereโ€™s something unique about Briggsโ€™ writing because even though she holds off on the sex, people still read it! That to me is a testament to her writing skill. ~ Under the Covers

This is my second time readingย Bone Crossed. Having not read the first three books the first time, I was completely lost to what was happening. I didnโ€™t feel attached to Mercyโ€™s character and didnโ€™t find the romance engaging. This time around though, everything was in perspective and I found that this book was a lot โ€œlighterโ€ in terms of the banter between characters. Briggs really kicked up the humour in this book! I found myself stupidly smiling at the teasing between Mercy and the werewolves and I noticed that Mercyโ€™s got a smart mouth in this one! This line was particularly funny:

There was even a โ€œHo, ho, ho,โ€ if you skipped around a little and deleted an โ€œeโ€ on the last โ€œhoโ€. Our green painter had a limited vocabulary and occasionally mixed up a professional working woman with a garden implement.ย Har har!

One thing thatโ€™s different about this series is that the vampires donโ€™t give off โ€œfuck meโ€ pheromones. Instead, theyโ€™re scary as hell, which is just as effective as keeping readers on their toes. James Blackwood creeps me out and the ending with the ghosts and zombie thing just wasnโ€™t for me. Yuck!

But the biggest thing about this book is probably the relationship between Mercy and Adam. While they arenโ€™t going at it like rabbits, thereโ€™s still one scene that is particularly memorable. Thereโ€™s something unique about Briggsโ€™ writing because even though she holds off on the sex, people still read it! That to me is a testament to her writing skill. Thereโ€™s so much more to Mercy and her world than just her relationships. And itโ€™s a world Iโ€™d love to read more of.

Favourite Quote:
โ€œJust like Medea,โ€ he murmured. โ€œAll I have to do is put my hands on you. You can be spitting mad…and then you lean against me and go all soft and still.โ€ He put his mouth against my ear. โ€œThatโ€™s how I know you want me as much as I want you.โ€ His arms were tight around me, and I knew that I wasnโ€™t the only one with wounds.

  1. I love this whole series but yes this book was just a touch different – it’s more of a bridge between the past and what’s coming up next for Mercy, Adam and the rest of the gang.

  2. I love Patricia Briggs writing whether it is Urban Fantasy or her high Fantasy. I think you’ve nailed a few things that make the Mercy Thompson series so good.

    Nice Review!

  3. I haven’t read this series but I’ve heard a lot about Mercy Thompson…will eventually read this series-thanks Ann for the great review!

  4. I really liked this series! She makes me yearn for more, especially with the secondary characters. I am glad you liked it the second time around, Ann. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Ann,
I just finished the first book of this series not too long ago, but haven’t gotten to book two. Too many books, soooooo little time. So the relationship between Adam and Mercy is like a bud under a layer of snow, waiting to spring forth ๐Ÿ™‚
I loved your favorite quote and couldn’t agree more with how you stated a writer’s “true” talent is making you want to continue to read, even though the sex hasn’t been consumated. (I paraphrased, yeah).
Your review just makes me want to get to these books faster.
    Great review.
