“Although I enjoyed this book, I wasn’t quite as invested as I thought I would be based on the recommendation.”
~ Under the Covers

I have struggled with finding new LGBT authors that I can really get into, and I recently saw someone I trust recommend this series so I gave it a try.  That being the only time I had heard of the author before.  Although I enjoyed this book, I wasn’t quite as invested as I thought I would be based on the recommendation.  Maybe the series gets better?

The topic of a homosexual couple set in these times is not easy to depict because it wasn’t acceptable for them to be out and together.  A lot of authors try to come up with ways in which two people would’ve risen above society’s notions and gotten an HEA.  But what about reality?  So I can appreciate the way the author did that and how she seems to have the setup the series.  Being a couple in the open was never the main focus of this book because it’s understood there is much to loose by being found out.  And that is an aspect of this story, and I’m sure series, that I truly enjoyed because it’s what usually pulls me out of a m/m historical romance.

But let’s talk about why I couldn’t give this a higher rating even though I enjoyed the book alright.  It took me forever to get into the story.  Yes, it can be the pacing which was pretty slow.  Or it can all the historical facts and information the author threw in about that bogged down the experience for me (I’m the type of reader that wants necessary facts, not information about dress codes and buttons).  But honestly, I think my biggest issue was the main characters.  I never cared enough about either of them.  Didn’t dislike them, just didn’t connect.  And sadly that didn’t really change throughout the story for me.

I know this author has a lot of fans so I’ll definitely read the next book in the series and see how I feel about that.  But based on this one read, I was a bit underwhelmed.

  1. I haven’t been able to finish this one. Like you, it was very hard for me to get into. If you don’t mind M/M/M, I’d like to recommend Misfits by Garrett Leigh. It’s one of my favorites.

    Nice review! 🙂
