Cherise Sinclair didn’t say much about who the next couple would be in this book so I was a little surprised when I learned it was going to be about a couple we’ve already met before. We first meet Beth and Master Nolan in BREAKING FREE, which happens to be one of my favorite books in the series. If you’ve read that book when you know that Beth’s sadistic ex-husband abused her to the point that she can no longer bear children. It’s a crushing reality for Beth and one that makes her feel insecure and inadequate. Beth does all she can, including taking hormones to try and help her conceive, but the doctors have said that she won’t ever be able to carry to term.
As you can expect, this book is loaded with emotion. There were countless times in this book when I was on the verge of tears. To really get the full experience of this book, however, I would suggest reading BREAKING FREE beforehand. There you’ll see how they meet and fall in love, but more importantly, you’ll get the details on Beth’s past.
Now, she is a landscape designer, but she also spends some of her time volunteering at a domestic violence shelter. There she becomes close to two kids in particular, Grant and Connor, and when the rest of her world is falling apart, so is theirs. Fate brings them together, and what Cherise Sinclair does with this story is truly inspiring. PROTECTING HIS OWN is definitely a new favorite in the series.
In addition to delivering an emotional story, Sinclair also lays down the foundation for two more Doms. The two men are cousins and Sinclair has intrigued me because apparently they like to co-top. Oh my, I cannot wait to read that!
And the last thing I want to talk about is the writing. I think Sinclair absolutely nails this one. I fell in love with the idea of this book, but the execution really is flawless. This book actually reminds me a lot of THE BEAST by J.R. Ward, so if you are a fan of both these series and enjoyed the latest installment to the BDB, I guarantee you’ll also love this one.
