“Estep pens a fun adventure.”
~ Under the Covers
PROTECT THE PRINCE is the second installment in Jennifer Estep’s fantasy series. I really enjoyed the first book and was looking forward to see what Estep had in store for readers with this one.
This book picks up where the last book finishes, so I think it’s important to read this series in order. Estep packs a lot of action in her books, but with her simplistic writing style, I feel like it’s very easy for readers to get lost in her world.
As I mentioned, this series is meant to be a Fantasy and it definitely has those components compared to her other books. However, I do think that this book does have a strong Urban Fantasy feel to it. This makes sense because Estep’s strongest genre is UF. However, I would’ve liked to see a bit more authentic Fantasy elements come to fruition here. The upbeat and simple language has its own merits, but sometimes I felt like the book didn’t hold up to the other Fantasy books I’ve read.
So, really, I guess it depends on how much you enjoy Estep’s voice. I have enjoyed it in the past, so it’s really not a huge issue for me. But I did want to mention it in case readers were curious if her writing style has changed along with the genre. It hasn’t really, so that can be a good or bad thing, depending on your preference.
Nevertheless, Estep pens a fun adventure and I look forward to reading more of the other books in the series.
