I’m going to be honest here. This was a total cover buy for me. Well, not JUST that. I also thought that I really wanted a cool series about the Four Horsemen so I went into this book really excited, even if I’ve never heard of this author before. And at first, I thought this had potential, but I quickly figured out it wasn’t for me.
I had some problems with the story. First of all, it was very simple. In the sense that there is hardly any world building. There isn’t much happening! And since I don’t want to put spoilers, I don’t want to elaborate on that, but it felt very boring and repetitive and it didn’t really expand on what was going on in the world around the main characters. So this was my first issue, but the main one.
Here comes the one I just couldn’t get past. The characters. And when I say that, I mean the main characters because there aren’t that many more. The heroine is so immature and annoying I couldn’t stand to be in her head. I’m not sure if she was meant to be funny and snarky but boy did that not work for me. She made me stabby 95% of the time.
Then there’s the romance. I really didn’t get it. It was a mix of insta-love and Stockholm syndrome, I guess? I just couldn’t connect with it and in the end I didn’t care if they ended up together or not. I don’t think I’ll be continuing on with this series. I guess this author’s style is just not for me.
