ARC Review: Over Us, Over You by Whitney G

I always get really excited when there’s a new Whitney G novella releasing.  Full disclaimer here that I haven’t read the Mid-Life Love duology so I wasn’t on pins and needles awaiting the release of this story as much as other fans have been.  I went into this without really knowing the characters or where they were coming from.  But this stands alone really well.

There are so many things I loved about this story but others that I think I would’ve liked to see changed.  For example, after reading quite a few of the short stories by this author I find that I have grown bored of the email and text message communication.  There’s always a lot of that in the stories and while I find it cute, when I read a few stories by this author a year with that same style I get bored with it.  I wish we could’ve done away with that in this one and that pains me to say it because they were cute.

On the other hand, I really liked the characters.  This reads a lot like a new adult story and Hayley embodies a bit of what I expect from a NA heroine.  Her brother and her were abandoned by her drug addict mother and when she went to jail they were put in the foster system, not together.  Hayley did suffer through some bad homes but her older brother became one of the most successful men after his tech startup company hit it big.  He’s always been the one that helps her and bails her out of stuff.  As much as Hayley says she wants to do things in her life without her brothers’ help, she did feel immature and not like a businesswoman that would’ve made it anywhere without her brothers’ support.  I was ok with this because she is young and like I said I expect some immaturity in the genre.  And she’s likeable in a bubbly and sweet way.

Corey on the other hand is her brothers’ best friend and his foster brother.  His best friends’ little sister had always been off limits for him.  But then when Hayley’s latest business ventures crashes and burns and she has to move to San Francisco to get back on her feet, her brother asks Corey to let her stay with him for a little while.

Again, I liked Corey’s character.  He’s not the alpha asshole I come to expect from this author and come to think of it it’s been a few books since we’ve gotten that.  I kinda miss it.

I liked that this was a story about good friends and a long simmering love.  There’s great chemistry between Corey and Hayley on and off the sheets.  My only other complaint was the final conflict.  It felt like it was thrown in just to add drama towards the end because there should’ve been something keeping them apart.  The way it was done felt forced and then easily resolved.  I was a bit disappointed with that.

Nevertheless, I’m still anxious to read whatever Whitney G puts out next and after reading this little taste, my interest has been peaked to go back and read the previous books in the series which are the romance of Hayley’s older brother who falls for a woman older than him.
