This book has been in my TBR pile for years but I only decided to read it now. And it’s mainly because of the beaver. Blue Bailey is having a rotten day. After her ex pulls a stunt that not even she can believe, she is heading straight to him to show him just how pissed she is. The whole situation can’t be helped since she is dressed as a massive beaver. But the costume does snag the attention of star quarterback Dean Robillard as he drives past her.
Of course, like the gentleman he is, Dean stops and asks her if everything is okay. Her prickly personality and even pricklier comebacks brings a smile to his face and right then and there, Dean decides that he’s going to help her. When she finally agrees to get into his car, Dean soon discovers that there is more to Blue than meets the eye and when they stop at his farmhouse, he also discovers that he’s been misinformed about who has been staying here.
This is my first read by Susan Elizabeth Phillips and yes, I know, shame on me for waiting this long. But I can truthfully say that I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. If you are a fan of Jill Shalvis and Lisa Kleypas and you haven’t read SEP already, then you need to go back and read this ASAP.
By the middle of the book, we really start to get deep into Dean’s family issues. We start to see different characters showing up, causing confusion and discomfort in some. All in all, the family has some issues they need to sort out between themselves, but I also think that is what makes this book so alluring. Not only does SEP capture the good, romantic moments between Blue and Dean, but she isn’t afraid of focusing on the not-so-wonderful moments between mother and son as well. We get to see all sides of the spectrum, creating a wonderfully balance story that explores more than one type of relationship. I will say though that if you aren’t a fan of dysfunctional families, then you may not like this book as it’s pretty heavy on that but the romance builds wonderfully throughout.
Dean and Blue has a unique relationship. They are quirky and have an interesting sense of humor. I laughed out loud many times and I would recommend reading this book whenever you’re in a bad mood. SEP’s humor will cheer you right up. And well, it may actually make you feel better about your own life when you compare it to what some of these characters have to go through.
I’m so glad I picked up this book. You can bet I’ll be returning to the other books to read them also. It’s nice to find an author who is able and willing to capture the good and the bad that comes with life. It makes the books far more believable and appealing and that’s probably why the Chicago Stars series is massively popular. SEP creates the perfect balance here.
