What’s your favorite thing about writing a romance about two characters that have always been each other’s nemesis? 

Watching them struggle with their old perceptions of each other, and then slowly realizing that there are facets of the person they never knew about.

Our heroine Angeline is admirable, strong and determined, even though she’s been through a lot.  Do you often find inspiration in real life people for your characters?

No, I never find inspiration in real people. I’m a pantser all the way, and my characters just show up. That’s the only explanation I have. While writing my books, I discover who they are and what drives them to obtain their story goal. The idea of making character charts leaves me cold. For me, the process is subconscious.

What is your favorite scene in the book?

Chapter Fifteen, page 318. Here’s the short excerpt:

More than anything, he wanted to give her a gift, her heart’s desire. She didn’t want anything for herself. She just wanted it for her sister. He didn’t know if he could manage it, but he would do everything in his power to make it happen. (I just teared up writing it. Colin had a lot of growth in this book, but oh, what a hero he made.)

The book also has humor.  Do you have a favorite funny quote?

Oh, yes! My editor laughed really hard when she read this one:

“Good Lord. No wonder virgins are kept in the dark. They would all be lifting their skirts for any man willing …to do that.” 😉

All of my books contain humor. I believe the ability to laugh over our own foibles sets us free. The humor in my books is part of my voice and integral to who I am. When I first started writing, I had to learn to balance the humor with the conflict and drama. Humor is often a great release—a moment to breathe for the reader after a particularly intense passage in a novel. Now that I’ve written five books, the process is seamless to me. I just trust my instincts.

Rakes are every popular.  What is it about a rake that draws you in and keeps you writing them?

To some degree every romance is a fantasy. In historical romance in particular, you have a heroine who is constrained by the proprieties of the time period. She has to be smart in order to reach her goal, because a misstep could potentially ruin her. At the same time, however, she usually has much to teach the hero who spends his time gambling, drinking, and wenching. He has friends, but dialogue for a hero is often about maintaining or gaining status. It is only with the heroine that he is able to open up and follow his path to finding his ideal lover with whom he will create the family that brings him love and happiness.

What is next for Vicky Dreiling?

Harry’s book! WHAT A DEVILISH DUKE DESIRES, book three in The Sinful Scoundrels series. I don’t have a publication date yet, but I’ll definitely let readers know as soon as possible.
