Interview and Giveaway with J.D. Tyler

Hi JD welcome back to Under the Covers. We have to be honest here and say that the Alpha Pack is one of our FAVORITE shifter series right now, so anytime there’s a new book out we are extremely excited!

Hey you guys, thanks for having me back today! And thank you, I’m so happy you’re as excited as I am to finally see Ryon’s story hit the shelves!

Hunter’s Heart released on September 3rd! Congrats! What can readers expect from Ryon Hunter?

Thanks! Readers can expect Ryon to be a hero with a heart of gold. He’s a gentleman, but tough when he needs to be—especially when it comes to protecting his mate.

His heroine, Daria, also has her own psychic abilities, that was very cool to see. How did this pairing come to be?

I wanted Ryon’s heroine to be someone who complimented him well. A woman with an affinity for nature and with a Psy ability of her own. I wanted her to be down to earth. This is where the idea came from to have her be a wildlife biologist studying real wolves in the Shoshone National Forest—this way she would be predisposed to eventually accepting the Pack and her new life with her mate.

What would you say is the biggest obstacle they have to overcome?

One of the biggest challenges is that Daria is thrust into Ryon’s world suddenly and has no choice but to become a shifter. In the beginning, she’s pushed over a cliff by a mysterious white wolf and is seriously injured. Ryon has to change her or she’s going to die. Not having a say is very hard for her accept, at first. Another challenge is that the answer to what happened to the Alpha Pack all those years ago when they were still Navy SEALs and were attacked by rogue shifters is tied to two people Daria cares for.

Of the Alpha Pack, who is your favorite hero? I know, I know, that’s hard, I can barely decide myself…please only choose one and tell us why!

Not fair! I get asked this and I know it’s a copout to say I love them all, but it’s true. But if I had to choose the three biggest scene-stealers in the Pack, they would be Aric Savage, Kalen Black, and Sariel (aka Blue). Aric is such a snarky bastard, but he’s funny as well. He tries to take over absolutely EVERY scene I write because he’s such an attention hog! Kalen, as a Sorcerer/Necromancer/panther shifter is just way cool. What’s not to like about a powerful Sorcerer who can command the elements? And then there’s the Seelie Prince Sariel, whom many of them call Blue. He’s such an enigma, and exudes this innocence of the world around him, a world he didn’t choose. His sense of humor is fun to write, and I want to come up with a story for him badly!

Inquiring minds NEED to know, are we any closer to getting Hammer and Blue’s books?

Hmm, Hammer and Blue’s books are not yet contracted—but I’ve got a blurbs written for them should my publisher offer for more books past the next 3 I have contracted. After Hunter’s Heart (Book 4), I do know who will get the next 3 stories. Book 5 is no secret since it’s already up for pre-order online, and it’s called COLE’S REDEMPTION. It’s the story of Healer Zander Cole, who was left with debilitating headaches and severe hearing loss after the final battle at the end of BLACK MOON. Zander’s story will be exciting, and a major turning point in the series. Zan’s book will be released on March 4, 2014.

What’s your favorite moment of HUNTER’S HEART? Care to share a bit of it with us?

I have to pick just one? Well, any scene where the Pack is doing the brotherhood thing, just hanging out razzing each other, is always a favorite. I love action scenes too, so the fight scene at the end where Ryon is desperately trying to defeat the beast is cool.

Which book of another author’s do you wish you had written and tell us why you chose that particular book.

Um, this week I sure as hell wish I’d written STYXX by Sherrilyn Kenyon! And not just because it’s a mega-seller, but because her world is truly amazing. I’ve been waiting for this story forever, and I can’t help but wish I’d come up with it.

If you could marry a fictional character, who would you pick and why?

If he’s a hero from a series other than one of mine, I’d have to say Harry Dresden, the Master Wizard/Private Investigator from the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. He’s sexy and super-cool!

What’s the best way to overcome writer’s block?

For me, listening to classic rock helps jogs loose emotions that will sometimes get me out of a rut. Getting a massage also helps, or going for a drive.

We always love to find out what our favorite authors read, so what’s the last book you read that blew you away and what are you currently reading?

I just got STYXX in the mail, so as soon as I turn in Zander’s story to my editor, I plan to kick back and indulge in a nice, long read. I’ve been waiting forever and can’t wait to dive in! The last books I read that blew me away were CAPTIVE PRINCE (books 1 & 2) by S.U. Pacat—a truly amazing m/m historical saga about a fallen prince who was sold into slavery by his wicked brother, and given over to the neighboring enemy prince. Book 3 is going to be awesome, but it’s going to be a bit of a wait, because Penguin acquired the rights to the series before Pacat released the last book! GRR! I have no doubt the wait will be totally worth it, though! (Um, Penguin, let’s get moving on that, shall we?)

About the Author

J.D. Tyler is an award-winning, multi-published author who writes for New American Library under three pseudonyms. Whether this is due to an overdose of ambition or a multiple personality affliction, she’ll never tell.

J.D. writes dark, sexy paranormal romance and has a huge thing for shifters, vampires, the Fae, and just about everything else that goes bump and grind in the night. She can’t get enough of those dangerous supernatural heroes, and the fun of creating her own was just too much temptation to resist… so she didn’t. J.D. doesn’t do self-denial.

When she isn’t writing, J.D.’s idea of a good time certainly isn’t cleaning house (sniff), bungee jumping (not in this lifetime, or the next), or camping (her idea of “roughing it” is a slow bellboy). She enjoys reading, being pampered like the diva she is, and spending time with her awesome family. She lives in Texas with her two teenagers.
