It is always a pleasure to chat with the wonderful Eden Bradley!ย  There’s a lot going on for her that maybe you haven’t heard yet and if this is the first time you’re hearing of her, then you better get reading!

Hi Eden, welcome back to UTC!

-Thanks so much for having me!

Your books, THE DARK GARDEN and FORBIDDEN FRUIT recently got a cover overhaul. What are your thoughts on the new covers?

-I adore them! THE DARK GARDEN (originally released in 2007) has new covers for both the US and UK re-releases-theyโ€™re very similar, both sleek, simple black and white covers, both gorgeous! Itโ€™s just the UK for the upcoming re-release of FORBIDDEN FRUIT, and I think I may love that cover even more. Almost every novel Iโ€™ve ever written as both Eden Bradley and Eve Berlin is being released in the coming year in the UK by Black Lace Books-very exciting!

In THE DARK GARDEN you tell a very emotional story that talks about BDSM without necessarily involving actual sex for part of the book. How did this story come to be?

-I wanted to tell a story that reflected my real life experiences in the BDSM arena, something Iโ€™m very open about. I wrote it with the intention of giving readers a window into some of the psychology behind BDSM practice. I wanted people to know what really goes on in the minds of people who are into this extreme sensual practice, how it often works, and mostly, that a Dom is far more than a bossy guy with a whip in his hand.

I also wanted people to know that in many cases what is negotiated between participants is that the โ€˜playโ€™ happens without sexual contact. Of course, Rowan and Christian couldnโ€™t keep their hands off each other foreverโ€”but part of the fun was watching Rowan break down Christianโ€™s staunchly-held sense of responsibility in carrying out what she signed up for in agreeing to submit to him.

It’s always interesting to find out more about the emotion behind a book and I’m assuming there was quite a bit of that with THE DARK GARDEN. Was there a particular scene or topic that was hard for you to write?

-I always fall into my characters, so those moments near the end where they love each other so madly but they both think all is lost is always wrenching for me. Although I sort of love when my own book makes me cry while Iโ€™m writing it. *G*

What about research? What kind of research went into this book?

-Well, as I mentioned, this came from a place of real life experience, and the club in THE DARK GARDEN is a blend of the various clubs Iโ€™ve visited. Soโ€ฆI suppose the โ€˜researchโ€™ came long before the book was writtenโ€ฆ? And I didnโ€™t exactly think of it as research at the time. : )

Of course the hero is to die for as usual. What do you think it is about Christian that draws women in like flies?

-I think weโ€™re all drawn to a man who is utterly confident, who has an air of command-and for me (obviously, since I wrote my dream Dom!) I love that he can balance that with a gentle side. And Christian is particularly charming in my mindโ€ฆeven though Iโ€™m the one who put him down on paper, Iโ€™m not sure itโ€™s something I can pinpoint. All I know is heโ€™s perfect. In every way. *girlish sigh*

We were very excited to see this book at Target (in the US) recently and have heard that Black Lace will be publishing not only THE DARK GARDEN (available Sept 13 in the UK) but the rest of your backlist as well. First of all congratulations! It’s always great to see that a talented author is getting in the hands of more readers, but also BDSM is now more mainstream reading than it was even a couple of years ago. How do you see this change?

-Thank you so much! I think this is a wonderful shift, reflecting a more sex-positive view for women. Itโ€™s time we came out and admitted that we are sexual beings with needs and desires and fantasiesโ€”and that some of those fantasies might have a dark side. Itโ€™s time the word got out!

Do you have a favorite BDSM book or Dom? (Not necessarily from your characters alone)

-Oh, you canโ€™t make me choose between my Doms! I love them all: Christian, Decker, Gabriel, Cam, Marcus, Damien, Desmondโ€”not to mention all my kinky vampires from my Midnight Playground seriesโ€ฆ impossible! But one of my favorite BDSM books of all time is Anne Riceโ€™s Exit to Eden. Itโ€™s not romance, per se, and itโ€™s fem Dom, but itโ€™s so gorgeously written, and even though the setting is a bit fantastical the psychology and emotion behind the characters is spot on.

When you are not writing, what do you do for fun?

-I work a lot, but on those rare days off I love to just spend time with friends, going out to eat, seeing movies, and I love to shop, especially for shoes. Or put me in a Sephora store and Iโ€™m lost in lip gloss for hours! Iโ€™m also a huge art geek, so I love to go to museums.

Say you are attending a convention and you have to put together your own panel. Who would you pick to speak with you and what topic will you talk about?

-The panel would be: Marquis de Sade, Anne Rice, the brilliant Molly Weatherfield (who wrote the book Carrieโ€™s Story-the modern day Story of O, in my opinion) and meโ€”the topic would be kinky sex, of course!

What’s next for Eden Bradley?

-Oh my gosh, so much I hardly know where to start!

As we both mentioned, my entire backlist of Bantam and Berkley Heat books are being re-issued in the UK by Black Lace. Harlequin recently released a number of erotic stories from the Spice line as an anthologyโ€”12 Shades of Surrenderโ€”and my story NIGHT MOVES was one of them. It was enormously popular, apparently, so now they are talking about releasing some of the Spice novels there, too-more news coming soon, I hope!

All three of my Eve Berlin books, PLEASUREโ€™S EDGE, DESIRES EDGE, and TEMPTATIONโ€™S EDGE, are being translated into Czech and Slavic. The publisher is very excited about itโ€”apparently Iโ€™m their first erotic novelsโ€”and theyโ€™re flying me to Prague in the spring, and Iโ€™m thrilled!

Iโ€™m also doing some self-publishing, starting with two previously published books Iโ€™ve re-edited and added tons of new content to: SANCTUARY is already available and BREAKING SKYE will be out in the next couple of weeks. After that Iโ€™ll be working on two more BDSM-themed novellas, both spin-offs of those two books.

Iโ€™ll be blogging and doing interviews all over the placeโ€”readers can find out where Iโ€™ll be by checking my websites: EdenBradley.com, EveBerlin.com, or my group blog Smutketeers.com.

What else? Life is happening so fast right now, Iโ€™m sure Iโ€™ve left something out. Oh-Iโ€™m about to move across the country to live with my best friend, fab author and my fellow Smutketeer R.G. Alexander. I wonder how much trouble two erotica authors can get into in the same houseโ€ฆ? Should be fun to find out!

Ohhhhh that would be the perfect set up for a reality TV show ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us today.ย  We love having you here at UTC and hope to see you back soon!

Surrender has its own rewardsโ€ฆ
This scintillating erotic debut tells the deliciously potent tale of one womanโ€™s quest for self discovery-in the intriguing underground world of Los Angelesโ€™s club sceneโ€ฆ
Rowan Cassidy likes to be in chargeโ€”especially in her personal life. As a Mistress at Club Privรฉ, the most exclusive bondage/S&M club on the West Coast, Rowan can live out her dominant fantasies safely, and with complete controlโ€”until Christian Thorne walks in. Self-confidant and sophisticated, heโ€™s a natural dominant if Rowanโ€™s ever seen one. Yet she canโ€™t stop thinking about him and imagining his touch.
Christian has returned home from Europe, hoping to break free from his dissatisfaction and malaiseโ€”and discovers the cure in Rowan. Heโ€™s dying to get his skilled hands on her and watch her surrender, to unlock the mystery of her that captivates him. Determined to be her Master, he makes Rowan a daring proposition: give herself over to him for thirty days.
Rowan finds Christianโ€™s offer terrifyingโ€”and impossible to resist. But abandoning herself to Christianโ€™s power might be more than she can handleโ€ฆOr it might be the realization of her true nature and the dark garden within her. There will be only one way to find out. And once the game has begun, thereโ€™s no turning back.

EXCERPT:
He led her to the bed once more, and this time he undressed her with his own hands, carefully, tenderly. He helped her step out of her shoes, then her wool slacks, slipped her crรจme-colored cashmere sweater over her head, left her in her ivory silk camisole and matching thong.
โ€œWeโ€™re going to take things slowly.โ€ He spoke softly, soothingly. โ€œOne step at a time. I just want you to get used to my touch first. To being under my hands. You know you can always stop the scene if anything gets to be too much for you. But I want you to try to stretch your boundaries a little.โ€
โ€œJust being here is a stretch for me.โ€
โ€œI know that. Thatโ€™s why I havenโ€™t thrown you over my knee and given you a good, hard spanking.โ€
His wicked grin was infectious and she couldnโ€™t help but smile.
โ€œAh, thatโ€™s better. Come now, sit here on the end of the bed.โ€
He pressed down a bit on her shoulder, guiding her. The bed was soft beneath her, as though it had a layer of down ticking on it under the rich brown and gold bedspread. The room was warm enough, but she shivered anyway. It was impossible to hold still.
He moved to the head of the bed and she couldnโ€™t see what he was doing, only heard the slide of a drawer. She felt the mattress sink a little beneath his weight as he sat down behind her. When he touched a fingertip to her bare shoulder she jumped.
โ€œItโ€™s all right, Rowan. Itโ€™s just me.โ€ He slid that fingertip down her arm, raising a trail of goose bumps. Down her arm to her wrist, over the back of her hand, then back up. His fingers continued their stroking exploration, over her neck, the line of her jaw. She could feel the heat from his hand on her skin. Incredible, how much heat came off that one finger. What would his whole body feel like pressed against hers?
Before she could banish that thought, her sex gave a squeeze, went liquid. She couldnโ€™t fight it with him still touching her. He continued to stroke her skin, moving down to her collarbone, and her nipples peaked hard as he swept across the swell of one breast, then the other. She closed her eyes and let herself enjoy the sensation.
His hand slid over the outer edge of her bra, down over the curve of her breast and she wanted to arch into that hand, to make him cup her breast, but she didnโ€™t move. She was trembling inside with desire.
His hand made its way over her ribcage, the lines of her abdomen, lower, until he brushed the very top of her panties. Her sex ached. She was sure he could sense the pacing of her breath, the heated flush of her skin. But right now she couldnโ€™t find it within herself to care. She only knew she didnโ€™t want him to stop touching her.
He took his hand away, leaving her skin cold. Then his mouth was next to her ear, whispering, โ€œIโ€™m going to blindfold you now.โ€
Panic hit her full force. โ€œNo!โ€
โ€œYes.โ€ It was a tone few would argue with.
โ€œIโ€ฆI canโ€™t do that.โ€
โ€œYou donโ€™t have to, Rowan. Thatโ€™s the beauty of this arrangement. Iโ€™ll do everything.โ€
He tucked her hair behind her ears while she sat, shaking and silent. She didnโ€™t know how to fight him.
The blindfold came down over her eyes, shutting the world out. She raised her hands to her face but he quickly pulled them away.
โ€œStill, Rowan.โ€
How many times had she given that very command to the bottoms sheโ€™d played with?
โ€œYou know how this is done. I want you to focus. To be aware of only the sensations in your body, your own breathing. Shut out the rest of the world. Itโ€™s just the two of us now. Let the rest fall away.โ€
His voice was soothing, hypnotic, yet her pulse was racing. She understood the purpose of the blindfold: to allow her to draw inward, to concentrate only on what was happening to her in this moment. But she couldnโ€™t shut her mind off. She couldnโ€™t stop telling herself why this whole scenario was all wrong, even as her body responded to his nearness, his hands on her. Even though her sex was soaking wet, her nipples hard and needing to be touched.
Pure agony.
He was touching her again. He lifted her hair from her neck, stroked the skin there, making her shiver.
โ€œYouโ€™re very responsive, Rowan. I like that. Youโ€™re like a deer; hyper-aware, hyper-sensitive.โ€
He let her hair fall back into place and continued stroking her skin. His fingertips moved over her face; her cheekbones, her lips, where he lingered just long enough that she knew if she darted her tongue out she could taste him.ย
Where had that idea come from?

  1. I like the simplicity of the new black and white. It isn’t as obvious as the corset, true, but it intrigues me and makes me wonder where this book will take me.

    Thank you for the giveaway!

  2. I love the black and white ones, itยดs something new now that everyone (and then some) is sporting underwear on their covers.

    best wishes, Linda xo

  3. This is a difficult choice! They are both mysterious and not the typical body shot which I like. I prefer the corset, it is sexy with a hint of naughty, without being obvious.

  4. I like the revised cover only because tulips are my favorite flower! I hope that this cover change will help new readers find great books after reading the book that shall not be named. I never worried about covers showing when I read print books but I know many others may have to be discreet. Good luck with your move!

  5. I personally like the corset better, I think its more in line with the book and not the current make everything look like 50 shades of gray trend.

  6. Love the black and white cover. It’s mysterious and gets the reader thinking about what the book’s about! Thanks for the post and the awesome giveaway!!

  7. I’m torn. On one hand I like the corset because of the way the shape fits onto the cover along with the color of the lettering. But I love the darkness of the new cover. So, I’m going with the new cover because of the color scale.

  8. I am not that crazy about the corset cover personally, and the 2 flowers are nice. But, I am really not a fan of the whole genre trying to mimic the “Shades” artist covers. I like sensual covers, either with people or objects that make the book enticing. I like the redo on the forbidden fruit cover- much better. Not as red-light district. sdylion(at)gmail(dot)com

  9. I like the old cover better because to me it conveys what the book is about better, when I see corsets I immediately think bdsm, flowers don’t really convey that to me, even though there is a kind of intimacy between the flowers…it all boils to the fact that I like sexier/raunchier covers!

  10. I like the older cover better. It attracts my attention more than the new cover. I usually pick the books I read by the cover, and if I saw a cover with flowers, I’d assume it would be just a sweet romance and not erotic enough for me.

  11. I like the new cover with the tulips best. My decision wasn’t based on which was was sexier – I just like the composition of the tulips cover much better than the corset.

  12. Akk-I tried to post twice earlier-having technical issues.
Love reading all the comments! Definitely good to know which covers appeal to readers-although this seems split. Maybe I’ll get my self-pubbed books up with multiple covers…hmmm…
    Thanks for commenting, everyone!

  13. Gosh. That is tough. In general I do like black and white but I also love corsets… hmmm. I think I will have to read the book first (since I have not yet) and then I can judge better which I think suits the storyline and also your writing style…

  14. Both covers are lovely but I prefer the cover with the corset. I think it’s sexier with a hint of naughtiness and makes me wanna check the book out.

  15. Thanks for a great post and congrats on the re-release!

I like the new covers. I’m not ashamed of what I read by any means but it’s nice not to have an “in your face” romance/erotica cover. I work in a pediatric healthcare office and so there are a lot of books I can’t read at work b/c of the covers unless I buy them on my Kindle. I could get away w/ this one ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks for the giveaway!

    efender1(at)gmail(dot)com

  16. I like both covers but i think i like the original better. I don’t really care to much for the ala 50 shades covers that are getting popular although they do remind the reader that it’s possibly similar to those books.

  17. I prefer the corset cover. The minimalistic approach is starting to become the “norm” and every book is starting to look the same. I want my sexy to look..well..sexy.

    Thanks for the giveaway!
