“IN ANOTHER TIME was definitely a bittersweet read that I think highlighted well what I was looking for.  That struggle of finding some normal in times that were so hard to get through.”
~ Under the Covers

Historical fiction has been a genre I’ve been getting more into the past few years.  A lot of that is my fascination with romance in times of war.  So when I saw Chanel Cleeton recommending this book I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pick up a review copy.  This was my first time reading Jillian Cantor and it was an interesting experience.

Hanna Ginsberg is a Jewish aspiring violinist attending music school and hoping to join the Berlin orchestra.  But her dreams slowly collapse around her as Hitler comes to power.  Her dreams of music and her dreams of love.  Max, a bookshop owner and non-Jew, does everything in his power to keep Hanna safe from the atrocities around them, and the horror he sees in their future after he discovers he can travel through time.

This book is told in different timelines.  We get to see Hanna and Max fall in love, the realization that horrible things are starting to happen.  And from there we are also skipping forward to time.  I don’t want to spoil the story so I won’t give you more details than that.  I think this book had a star-crossed lovers feel in terms of the romance.  It did take a little while for me to get sucked into the story and that may have something to do with either the way it’s told or the writing style.  But once I was invested, I just had to know how things would turn out.  Even if I had my sad premonitions that ultimately came true.

IN ANOTHER TIME was definitely a bittersweet read that I think highlighted well what I was looking for.  That struggle of finding some normal in times that were so hard to get through.  And the hardship of moving on from that.  Rebuilding your life, dealing with trauma and guilt.  It may not be an epic romance but worthwhile reading.  I will definitely read another book by this author.
