“They were the perfect match!”
~ Under the Covers

I’ve been a fan of Kristen Callihan sports new adult romances and when this series first came out I knew I wanted to try it but then it kept getting pushed down my TBR and I got behind.  So I knew when we created Romanceopoly that I needed to make myself read this book for the rock star spot.  I’d been neglecting this series for too long!

IDOL starts off when the band is actually on break.  One of the members of the band had attempted suicide and they are all still trying to adjust to the new dynamic.  That involves also taking a break from each other.  So our hero is the lead singer and he is hiding out from the public in a small town at a friends house.  He quickly develops a connection with his sweet next door neighbor who seems to not know who he is right away.  Not only is there an attraction but she’s also a singer/songwriter and he can’t wait to draw her away from the confines of her house and show off her talent with the world.

There was something a bit reminiscent of A STAR IS BORN without the tragedy.  I was scared that it would bring in the stereotypes of rock stars into this story (which I’m not a fan of) and maybe have a heroine fangirling over him, but that’s completely different than what this book delivered.  It had a more serious and mature vibe which I was very thankful for.  I know not all the books will be the same in this series, and side note I’m almost dying to read book 3 now which is about that member of the band who attempted suicide, but I completely trust Ms. Callihan to handle the subject well and dig deep into the emotions of the characters.  That’s certainly what she delivered here.

I enjoyed how she handled the personal conflicts each character had as well as their relationship.  IDOL was full of layers.  There’s chemistry between them and I loved that the chemistry also mixed with their love of music.  They were the perfect match!  But they also had life choices and career decisions to make.  It was a satisfying read and overall, I really enjoyed IDOL. It’s a great kick start to a mature rock star series in my opinion and it’s left me wanting more.
