“Do I think I’ll continue this series?  Probably not.  I’ll stick to Ms. Crownovers’ cuter books.  I think when I read books about REAL bad guys I want to be a bit darker.”
~ Under the Covers

I debated long and hard whether I wanted to pick up this book.  The main reason was that I never went back to the Welcome to the Point series after reading book 1.  Somehow, it never called to me enough.  So I knew I would go into this one (which is a spin off) not knowing the characters.  I hate that!  But I do like Jay Crownover’s writing, so I ended up trying it.  Here’s the thing.  The writing is good.  The emotion that the author wanted to convey is there, even.  But I just can’t connect with the characters of The Point.

I was expecting Nassir to be a ruthless badass.   I know sometimes I complain when there’s too much violence, but based on the background we are given, I wanted more from his persona.  I’m not sure if he was a bit more ruthless in previous books in the original series, but he came across a bit tame to me in this one.  And I also never got to fall in love with him, and for that I’m not sure why.

This isn’t the first book with a stripper heroine that I’ve read, and I’ve enjoyed some in the past, however this one didn’t quite hit the mark for me.  Keelyn grated on my nerves often.  There’s just something about her that kept pushing my interest away.  Ultimately, I find that my lack of caring for either of the main characters made me a bit ambivalent about this book.  Even though they have chemistry and there’s quite a bit of sexy in here.

Do I think I’ll continue this series?  Probably not.  I’ll stick to Ms. Crownovers’ cuter books.  I think when I read books about REAL bad guys I want it to be a bit darker.  I know I’m in the minority here since most people have loved this book.  Nonetheless, I still enjoyed reading it for the plot and writing.  Just took me a little longer to finish than I would’ve liked.

  1. Thanks for the review, I haven’t read any books by this author yet but I have some of her older titles on my TBR pile. The cover is nice but I require characters I connect with as well as a good story.
