ARC Review: Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely

If Mad Max, The Greatest Showman and The Quick and the Dead had a baby, it would be GUNSLINGER GIRL.  I had no idea what to expect going into this book, but that cover lured me in.  Honestly, I thought this would be a western young adult storyline and to be quite honest, the ones I’ve tried to read in the past I’ve had to DNF.

This book surprised me from the very start.  The bit of western that this story has is mostly at the beginning and it doesn’t necessarily reflect the theme of the book.  I know some people may be hesitant to pick it up because of that so rest assured it’s blended in so well you can’t even tell the western from the futuristic dystopian.

Serendipity, known to her friends as Pity, is forced to run away from her evil father and her home in the communes.  She wasn’t prepared for what the world outside would bring but she knew it had to be better than the certain horror her father had in store for her.  Lyndsay Ely gives us a shock early on in the book and from that moment on I was on guard and waiting for more to come.  The dangers, the things you have to do to survive, the way others live, the friendships you loose and the ones you gain, and even love along the way.  I went on this ride with Pity, learning along with her, turning the pages and finding a world I wanted to explore more and more.

GUNSLINGER GIRL was refreshingly addictive and original.  It’s full of political intrigue, secrets and betrayals, the backdrop of a circus of sorts and a dystopian setting.  Once it grabs you it doesn’t let go.  This is a fast paced, action packed ride.  The ending is open enough that I think we should be getting a sequel, and if that’s the case, I can’t get it fast enough.
