“…she brings us action and a gritty and grim adventure.”
~ Under the Covers

If Ava thought killing her reaper and thus winning her freedom would make her life easier, she was dead wrong. Being a hellhound isn’t an easy life, especially when a murderous presence from the past comes back to haunt you, bringing zombies with him. Ava once again finds herself in the thick of thing with little hope of survival, but, she’s tougher than she thinks and not entirely alone.

This is the second book in the Hellhound Chronicles by Caitlin Kittredge and much like the first book, she brings us action and a gritty and grim adventure. I love this about Kittredge’s book, I know if I want something a little bit grim – excuse the pun- where the characters aren’t your cookie cutter UF hero and heroine, she is just the gal to come to.

What I really liked about this book were the flashbacks to Ava’s past. We know that Ava has been hard and not for the faint hearted and the flashbacks hammers this home as well tying in nicely with current events. This book did feel slow though, it took a while for it to pick up momentum and for everything to fall together and although I wouldn’t say I was bored I was however, eagerly waiting to get to the juicy parts. I would also have liked to see more of Leo and Ava, we have been told they have a very big destiny, but that seemed to have been sidelined in this book.

If you like your Urban Fantasy gritty and dark, then you need to give this series a go, it has an interesting and original world and characters that are both intriguing and unusual. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
