“Katy Regnery has a unique and captivating voice in contemporary romance that is easy to love.”

Ginger’s Heart is book three in a series of standalone novels in Katy Regnery’s A Modern Fairytale series. Each is loosely based on a fairytale, with Ginger’s Heart using “Little Red Riding Hood” as its inspiration. If you’ve read the blurb, it’s quite clear that the plot revolves around Ginger McHuid, daughter of a well to do horse breeder in Kentucky, and her two loves, Cain Wolfram and Josiah Woodman. Josiah and Cain are first cousins by twin women, but represent two halves of a coin, one light and one dark. Josiah is the golden boy: brave, honorable, honest, and faithful. Cain is the bay boy: dark-haired, troubled, and womanizing. Both cousins love each other deeply and it’s clear from the time Ginger is a young teen that she’s captured their hearts as well. Ginger’s Heart follows their relationships into adulthood, where Ginger must finally choose whom she must build her forever with. The path is fraught with heartache that threatens to destroy the love and friendship that has bound these three together since they can remember.

I truly had no idea what I was getting into when I began Ginger’s Heart. I hadn’t read much other than the blurb, and by that description, I had assumed I was walking into a ménage story. That couldn’t be farther from the truth, and while I have no issue with a good ménage, I was thrilled that this particular story didn’t head in that direction. For readers that abhor cheating in their romances, you’ll be happy to hear that there’s none of that either. Katy Regnery is a phenomenal, lyrical writer. She has a beautiful, flowing prose that’s effortless and lends itself well to genuine emotion. Josiah’s character could have been cookie-cutter, the stereotypical golden boy, but he’s just the opposite, despite being as pure and noble as one could imagine. His love for Ginger is unfailing, strengthening over the years. He aims to give Ginger everything he has with every fiber of his being. Cain might appear on the outside to care about no one but himself and his conquests, but we get to learn his true heart through the author’s use of changing perspectives by chapter. I really enjoyed seeing some of the same scenes played out in each of their heads. I was as confused and torn as Ginger was, having to choose between two men that seem to offer such different futures or maybe no future at all. This is a long novel by romance standards, and while it seemed a bit daunting at the onset, it was well worth the time invested. It had me genuinely sobbing in parts, shocked in disbelief in others. Though you know this is a novel with a solid monogamous HEA and might predict where it will end, I guarantee you will never predict how you get there. Prepare to have your heart ripped out and bleeding for these characters whom you’ll come to love. The secondary characters are memorable as well, from Ginger’s grandmother to Cain’s father, Klaus. I need to go back and read the first book in this series and will be waiting patiently for the next. Katy Regnery has a unique and captivating voice in contemporary romance that is easy to love.

  1. This sounds nice but it’s not for me… I don’t like triangles especially when both characters would be great hea’s…thanks for the heads up

  2. Thanks for the review, I’m not a big fan of triangles. I’ve also read the Katy’s Never Let You Go and it was a 3 star for me.
