“The narration felt really choppy to me, making it a little difficult to get into. I also found the book to be extremely predictable this time around, which is strange because Showalter usually keeps readers on their toes.”
~ Under the Covers
I’m going to cut to the chase with this book. First off, I was looking forward to diving back into this world because I really enjoyed the first book of the series. However, I have discovered something about the writing in this book. As a fan of Showalter for many years, I can safely say that I have read quite a bit of her books so I am familiar with her writing style. However, it seems that she is changing up her style quite a lot in this series and to be honest, I’m not really sure how I feel about it.
The narration felt really choppy to me, making it a little difficult to get into. I also found the book to be extremely predictable this time around, which is strange because Showalter usually keeps readers on their toes. But I knew a character was going to die almost immediately after they were introduced, so I don’t know if it was just me or if the book really did feel too foreseeable.
However, I am going to keep trying the other books in the series because I like the premise of the series. It has an Immortals After Dark feel to it, so if you like Kresley Cole’s paranormal writing, then I think you will enjoy this. But the writing style of this book felt more like Cole’s YA series, the Arcana Chronicles, which I actually wasn’t a fan of. So I guess I will have to learn how to deal with the chopping style.
So while this book wasn’t a total hit for me, I am still looking forward to seeing what Gena has in store for her readers next.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it Annie
I don’t think I could get beyond the choppy writing.
Weird about the change in style, but I do like IAD so maybe it will be a hit for me. Thanks, Annie!
