“Although I didn’t enjoy the romance very much in this one, there were hints of lots more exciting things to come”
~ Under the Covers
When dragons tore through a rift in the sky they destroyed the world leaving only a relatively small population of humans alive. Now, ever human has to survive not only this harsh new world but constant attacks by dragons driven mad with rage by something in the Earth’s atmosphere. The only way to stop the madness? The dragon must find their mate. Only then will a dragon’s sanity return and their blood lust dissipate.
Gwen is the leader of the small settlement in Shreveport. She was the only one willing to take the job, yet all she seems to do is screw it up. And the people who pay the price are the ones she’s trying to protect. Now a golden dragon keeps attacking the settlement, apparently in search of his mate who he can scent within. Gwen never expected it to be her. And she certainly didn’t expect to fall in love.
We are well into the Fireblood Dragon series now, we all know the score; dragons be crazy. Unless of course they can sniff out their mate, which helps bring clarity back into their mind. Fire in his Spirit follows this story line without deviation and we watch as Gwen continually brings her dragon back from the brink of insanity and violence. It’s especially hard with Vaan, our dragon hero, as he suffers from short term memory loss and can easily spiral out of control.
As always our dragon hero was adorably alpha and protective, all whilst being vulnerable because of the encroaching madness. The issue I had, which prevented me from giving more than 3.5 stars to this book was Gwen. I understand insecurity and I like it when a heroine shows a little of it. But with Gwen I thought it breached the realms of understandable and straight into whiny. I got bored of Gwen’s constant inner dialogue which revolved around how incompetent and awful she was.
However, what I did like was the blossoming romances that are hinted at; firstly we have Andrea and Liam in Shreveport and even more interestingly the baddie has gotten himself a mate! I can’t wait to see that play out. Maybe in this new world he can redeem himself? Fingers crossed! The story also continues with the possibility of something even worse coming through the rift and destroying what remains of humanity as well as the dragons.
Although I didn’t enjoy the romance very much in this one, there were hints of lots more exciting things to come, which has left me excited for what is coming next.
