ARC Review: Feverborn by Karen Marie Moning

If you’re reading this and haven’t read the other books in the series, SHAME ON YOU! But also, if you’re contemplating on starting this series by reading this review be warned that some events that could be considered spoilery may be mentioned in this review. You’ve been warned.

First off, I want to say that every time I pick up a Karen Marie Moning book I am once again reminded of how epic this world is. Not only is Moning’s writing gripping and all-consuming, but her characters simply leap off the pages of this book. There are characters in this series that you may love or you may hate deeply. More often then not, you’ll grow frustrated with something a character does in this series but I always like to remind people, there is still more to come. The story isn’t finished yet and you will get your answers. Perhaps you may even change your mind about certain characters. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Moning can make you feel a full range of emotions when reading her books.

As I read FEVERBORN, I grew crazed. I started talking to myself, whispering, “Oh my god” over and over as I read certain scenes. Despite the current predicament Mac is in with humans the trying to kill her and the whole black hole mess they need to clean up, Mac is stronger than ever. Surprisingly, her relationship with Barrons is even more so. For all you readers who have been wanting Moning to explore more of the romance between Mac and Barrons throughout the series, she does in this one. She gives us those raw moments, those infuriating ones but she also delivers on those steamy ones. Hell, I’m getting all hot just thinking about it again!

The big change she made in the last book with Dani is fully explored in this one. Mac and the rest of the crew are having a hard time accepting Jada but there are a couple of people who are glad to see her back and will take her any way they can get her. This strange, dangerous thing between her and Ryodan is heating up and I LOVED watching it unfold. I will admit, I didn’t like Jada in the last book. She was too cold, too detached from the wild Dani we all knew and loved. But the Jada in this book surprised me. We see more of her vulnerabilities, her wants and desires and I found myself relating to her character way more than I have ever before. Before I was just tolerating her until the return of Dani. Now I am quickly understanding why KMM did what she did with her character.

KMM is not only a master at words but I truly believe she excels are writing heroes. The Highlanders, the Nine, Christian, Dancer, Ryodan. And of course, the one that beats them all – Jericho Barrons. They’re an infuriating bunch, yes, but I just adore the way they can be all alpha but soften that tiny bit when in the presence of a woman they love. They don’t often show that they care but when they do…just try not melting into a puddle of goo.

This is one of my favorite series with Ryodan:

“Let me tattoo you.” He was silent a long moment then said, “Jada.”

She went utterly still, not liking him this way, not trusting this at all. He was being direct, noncaustic. Treating her as if she was exactly what she was – a woman who’d been through hell and made it back by sheer force of will and the skin of her teeth. He was calling her by her chosen name. Asking her to “allow” him to do something. No longer berating her for not being who he wanted her to be. Offering his protection. No longer jabbing at her or giving her anything to fight.

She didn’t know how to deal with this man without fighting him. “No,” she said.

“At least carry the phone.”

She regarded it as if it were a snake that would bite her the instant she reached for it. “It’s a little late to start worrying about me.”

“I always worried about you.”

And because I get a lot of crap at UTC for loving a bastard like Barrons, I have to include a line that fully encompasses why I love him. In this scene Ryodan is telling Barrons to stop Mac from eating Unseelie. His response?

“She makes her own decisions,” he said.

Ah, finally a man who not only can appreciate a woman but sees her as something of an equal. A partner. Nothing gets sexier than that!

I urge you to read this series if you haven’t already. FEVERBORN is a masterpiece of epic proportions. With this book, Karen Marie Moning shows us exactly why she is such an indispensible writer in the genre.
