Review: Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender

Well, I picked this book up because it has a STUNNING cover and also it was one of my picks to read for Pride month and #queerblackathon where my goal was to read outside of the more popular m/m or f/f. I also wanted an #ownvoices story, so this one was the perfect pick for it. And let me just say that the story lives up to that gorgeous cover. It’s vibrant and enthralling and literally swept me off my feet.

FELIX EVER AFTER is 100% a character driven story and I fell for Felix from the get-go. He’s Black, queer and trans but he’s also struggling with his sexuality. The author does an amazing job at taking the reader along for that emotional journey and the search for his truth. I was honestly rooting for him from start to finish whether it was for a romance, his art or his internal struggle. One of the most likeable characters I’ve read in a while!

That being said, there is a romance thread throughout this story. I think it was done in a subtle way and it made sense. If you’re looking for a sweet romance then this would be it even if it’s not the focus of this book.

I haven’t read many books with trans characters but I’ll certainly be on the lookout for more and I’ve now added this author to my reading list. The ease of the writing style in this book made it flow so nicely and such an addictive read.
