ARC Review: Ever After by Rachel Lacey

This is the second book I read by this author (and in this series) and I keep coming back to it because of the big focus on animals. I’m a sucker for a cute puppy! In this installment, the heroine Olivia is a bit of an activist against animal cruelty. In her case, it’s more about the treatment of chickens at the local plant. One night of drinking and one bright idea to graffiti said plant and she ends up spending the night in jail. Taken there by hunky police officer, Pete Samson.

I love the complete opposites of Pete and Olivia’s personalities! He’s a by-the-book police officer, who is bottling up inside a lot of guilt about something in his past. She’s a free spirit. Her big shot lawyer father expected her to go to law school and follow in his footsteps but she’s more concerned with following her true passion. She loves animals, wants to fight to protect them. A vegetarian who likes to meditate in the early mornings at the park. Now how does that mix with straight laced Pete? I absolutely adored them together!

Olivia is pretty mature, which I always enjoy. She has come to a crossroads in her life where she has to decide whether she continues following her dreams or she “grows up” and follows the path her parents expect her to. She has a good head on her shoulders, even when she’s taking risks to stand up for her ideals. Pete on the other hand is the one that doesn’t show you much about himself. Add in to that the fact that he shouldn’t be dating someone he arrested unless he wants to compromise his job, and he’s got a lot of turmoil to deal with. All while trying to keep her safe.

EVER AFTER is a cute small town romance with just a bit of corruption and chocked full of cute cuddly animals that I found very sweet to read. I will be looking for more in either this series or by the same author.
