“CONSUMED is a pulse pounding, intense and emotional ride that will leave you breathless.”
~ Under the Covers
The Warden is back with another contemporary romance and, as you can expect with any of her books, CONSUMED is a pulse pounding, intense and emotional ride that will leave you breathless. One of my favorite things about J.R. Ward’s writing is how fearless and real it is, even raw at times. She doesn’t pull any punches, she’s never scared of going where her stories are supposed to in her mind. Even if those decisions can be tough ones to put her characters through.
I was not prepared for how intense the first 15% of this book was. After all these years, she managed to shock me! And then she was able to reel me back in and deliver a gripping story. Not only of love and romance between two very broken people. But heartache, pain, grief, guilt. First responders have such an important but brutal job and so often they do it at a great cost to themselves. I really enjoyed the way this book touched on that and it made it real in a very brutal and raw way.
Anne has wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps as a firefighter her whole life. And she’s damn good at it! It’s a tough job in a man’s world, but she earns the respect of her coworkers including her brother and the man she’s starting to test the waters on a relationship with. Anne gets really tested in this book and she comes out so strong. I really liked her character, surprisingly because she’s not necessarily my favorite type of heroine. And then there’s Danny. I think he’s the most beta hero that Ward has ever written. And I loved every bit of it. He’s so solid and strong, always there for the woman he loves. I will also say that I didn’t realize how sexy it would be to see a man using a chainsaw in the middle of a fire.
This book has the signature writing style of J.R. Ward and it’s emotional and intense. It’s also left the whole cast of characters setup in a way that I can’t wait to read more about all of them. You won’t want to miss it.
Favorite quotes:
“Are you twelve?” As he started to smile, she knew exactly where his mind had gone. “Not inches. Age.”
Tragedy was but a moment. Responsibility for it was forever.

Loved how intense and raw this book was. I think I would buy anything she wrote. I wasn’t expecting this much intensity after the prequels. Nice surprise!
