ARC Review: Backfire by Keri Lake

Backfire is a story of love conquers despite the character’s violent past and Ms. Lake did a phenomenal job telling the story.  It’s a dark and gritty story filled with good mystery, action, sexy and a little heartbreak but most of a story full of hope.

PhotoJournalist, Lucy stumbles on a major crime involving the corruption amidst local police.  She soon finds out that the issue at hand is even bigger than what she can handle and now her life in danger.  A stroke of luck gives her a chance to follow a lead and she meets Jase but it turns out, Jase is also doing his own investigating.  Of course, their reasons may have some connection but the motivation is entirely different.  Jase has been taken to an underground prison, enslaved, abused and thought for dead by everyone he knows.  His motivation is revenge.

A very intense novel by Keri Lake, not for the faint of heart.  This story contains a moderate amount of violence, abuse, and sexual content, and scenes that will leave your stomach in knots.  I expected this book to be darker than Ricochet but I was still affected as if I didn’t brace myself.  I hated to read about their past, it left me so sad.  All the twists in this story got me in all kinds of knots but Ms. Lake broke up the intense moments with scenes of hope and love, and scenes hot enough to make you sweat.  There’s also good mystery and suspense scenes that Keri Lake seems to be good at inserting in the right moments.

The chemistry between Lucy and Jase was palpable from the beginning until the end.  Just like any Lake books,l it gets pretty steamy.  Most of all, I love that they were a good match not just physically but also mentally.  Lucy and Jase’s story will utterly break your heart but will lift your spirits at the end of the story.  Backfire is everything I expected and nothing more.  Kudos Keri Lake for a job well done.
