Iโm not overly surprised to find Adrian in a pensive mood when I visit him for this interview. I know heโs under a great deal of pressure now, although he hides it beautifully, as always.
I find him in his office, looking out the window at the native Southern California landscape. His hands are clasped beneath his wings and his inky black hair touches the collar of his dress shirt, having grown longer over the last few weeks as his world has steadily unraveled. Those beautiful wings of his, so pristinely and blindingly white except for the crimson tips, reveal so much about him. I wonder if he realizes that. He can hide them at will and the fact that heโs chosen not to do so today tells me how agitated he is. They stretch and flex when heโs of a mood, the only visible sign he gives of how heโs feeling.
I know itโs those feelings that are exacerbating his problems now. Heโs a Sentinel, after all. An angel created to hunt and punish other angels. He was designed and built to feel no emotion, to function almost like a machine. A Terminator, perhaps. One mission, one purpose, no deviations. But heโs deviated a lot over the years. Now more so than ever before. And heโs paid the price. Heโs paying it even now.
โHi, Adrian,โ I say in greeting, although heโs known Iโve been standing here watching him.
He faces me and Iโm struck, as I always am, by the brilliance of his cerulean eyes. All of the Sentinels have blue eyes and he explained why when I asked him previously. The Sentinels are seraphim angels–the โburning ones.โ The blue of their irises is literally the flame inside them. Pure and hot. Beautiful in an eerie, preternatural way.
โMs. Day,โ he returns, in his smooth deep voice with its unique resonance. He can compel with that voice, but so far heโs resisted compelling me to do anything. At least I think heโs resisted… โAh, youโre dressed today. Iโd almost forgotten how you look when youโre not wearing your pajamas.โ
I grin. โHey, itโs one of the perks of being a writer. How are you today?โ
โAs well as can be expected.โ
โWhereโs Lindsay?โ
โTraining.โ
I nod, understanding. The woman he loves can kick some serious ass, but sheโs still fragile compared to the vampires she hunts and the Sentinels who are training her. โAre you ready for the interview?โ
โNo.โ But he moves to his desk, gesturing for me to take a seat.
His wings dissipate like mist just before he sits, which always fascinates me. Theyโre so much a part of him and yet he can tuck them away where mortals like me canโt see them.
I eye him as he gets comfortable, admiring the savage beauty of his face. Heโs stunning, with a dark and edgy sensuality that makes him seem more fallen angel than not.
โWhat do you like most about yourself?โ I ask.
His brows rise. He leans back in his chair and studies me in return. โIs this part of the interview?โ
โIt can be.โ
โHmm… That I can still learn, I suppose. That I can change my mind, be surprised, discover something new.โ
โYouโre evolving.โ
โYes, perhaps thatโs the way to say it. After all these years… after all Iโve seen, Iโm not done formulating new opinions of things that should be old hat to me.โ
โWhat do you like least about yourself?โ
His lips curved wryly. โHow much time do you have?โ
Now itโs my brows that rise. โReally?โ
โPart of evolution is trial and error, and Iโve made more than my share of mistakes. Unfortunately, I also keep making new ones.โ
โThatโs part of being human,โ I point out.
โBut Iโm not human.โ
Right. I consider him further. โWhat havenโt you done that you would like to do?โ
โTake Lindsay away,โ he says without hesitation. โFor a week at least, longer if we could manage it.โ
โWhere would you go?โ
โShe likes the water. I like the mountains.โ
โSo you can fly.โ
โYes.โ He smiles, which is a sign of how Lindsay is changing him. โSo I suppose it would be somewhere with mountains overlooking the ocean.โ
โSomething to look forward to.โ
โYes.โ
โWhat are you most afraid of?โ
โFailure,โ he responds, with the same alacrity as the previous question. โToo much is riding on me… too many people are dependent on my getting the job done. Thereโs too much at stake. And I have Lindsay now.โ
โYou wonโt fail.โ I have no doubt about that.
โNo,โ he agrees with conviction. โI wonโt.โ
And really, thatโs the number one thing there is to know about Adrian right there.

Men Out of Uniform
by Maya Banks, Karin Tabke and Sylvia Day
The hottest thing about a man in uniform is imagining him out of it…ย
They may enforce the rules, but when men in uniform are off duty and under the covers, they’re experts at breaking them. In this searingly sexy anthology, popular authors Maya Banks, Sylvia Day, and Karin Tabke present men in uniform-unzipped…
Steamlust is romantic erotica that reflects the excitement, fantasy and rebellion of steampunk. Not sure what steampunk is? Think Victorian elegance and aesthetics meets futuristic invention and exploration. The genre of steampunk itself has transcended the Victorian (or Edwardian) eras โ in Kristina Wright’s inventive anthology, it can be any time period, real or imagined, that blends elements of science, history, fantasy and technology. Until Steamlust, the genre had been missing romantic relationships and erotic encounters. Steampunk erotic romance is shiny brass and crushed velvet; mechanical inventions and romantic conventions; sexual fantasy and kinky fetish. It’s steam powered sexy romance!
Editrix extraordinaire Kristina Wright creates a lush and fantastical world of women-centered stories and romantic scenarios, first for steampunk fiction. Fetishizing the wardrobe, language, fantasy and rituals of steampunk, Steamlust includes alternate histories, second worlds, time travel and contemporary settings.
I read some reviews about Mrs Day’s books and all of them are so good that I’m excited to read them.
Those anthologies sound good too so now I don’t know where to begin…
