Let’s Go Haunting

Hi, everyone! I am so excited to be here with you today (and thanks to Francesca for inviting me over!). After a long, wickedly hot summer, I’ve started to focus my attention on fall…and the magic that this time of year seems to bring to me.

My local craft stores have their Halloween decorations up, and, I’ll confess, I’ve already made several Halloween purchases. Two of my favorites? The bone-shaped cookie trays that I snagged and the finger-shaped trays to match them. Oh, Halloween, I do love you.

It’s my love of Halloween that actually inspires many of my stories. Growing up, I could never get my fill of spooky tales. I loved hearing about monsters—mummies, vampires, werewolves. I would watch every scary show I could find, and I would stay up long into the night reading stories with my trusty flash-light gripped in my hand.

Halloween is in my blood. I decorate for it the way some folks decorate for Christmas—all out, baby! I throw a Halloween party every year. I bob for apples. I play musical headstones. I enjoy the scary time.

And as I enjoy, I spin tales. During the month of October, I come up with so many paranormal story ideas! I mean, how could I not? Everywhere I look, I see inspiration. I’ve got little goblins at my door. When you step on my welcome mat, it howls at you. Spooky music plays from my bathroom (ah, yeah, you might not want to know about that). Inspiration strikes me at every turn. So during October, you’ll find me, my fingers flying over the keyboard as I write as frantically as I can.

Oh, and I have one rule about October: I MUST be writing a paranormal story. Sure, I enjoy my romantic suspenses, love them, in fact, but I have to write at least one paranormal story during the month of October, or I’m just a super sad girl.

What about you? Do you enjoy the spooky times? What’s your favorite part of Halloween?

To get you in the Halloween mood, I’ll give one commenter a copy of my new book, HOWL FOR IT.

Happy haunting. 😉

  5. Halloween is my very favorite holiday, I love to totally decorate my house and I make costumes for the whole family to have a theme (one year I was Cruella DeVil and my hubby and the kids were dalmations) I work the door and we always have a million kids. We read the tell tell heart and make fingers from peanut butter fudge that look so much like real fingers it creeps people out. Anyway I love Halloween! Carin

Susan, one of my favorite things is to see the costumes that they wear. Sometimes, I’ll get really surprised and impressed by a costume that I’ve never seen before. That kid gets extra candy. 😉

  10. My favorite part about Halloween is watching the little kids dress up and come to my house to get candy. Love seeing the little witches, supermen, ghosts, and other creative costumes!

  11. I like Halloween. When I was younger, we would decorate the house, from the spider webs to the dancing hanging skeleton. We even had a black cat that would sit in the window and watch people come and go.

  12. I love Halloween too! I love all the cool decorations and gadgets you can find every year. My favorite is a candy dish with a hand in it that moves every time someone takes a candy bar! It’s becoming popular overseas too. My sister lives in Norway and she tells me Halloween is getting bigger every year!

  13. Thanks for a fun post and congrats to Cynthia on the new release!

I like Halloween cuz of the spooky movies and haunted houses. I’m a wimp so I don’t do the very scary but it’s still fun. I also love how excited the kids get 🙂

  14. I love everything about Fall and Halloween! I love the chilly weather, the changing leaves, the smells, and I absolutely love that we get an entire month of spooky movies and tv shows. And then to top it off we get Halloween the one time of year that we can be anyone or anything we want and get lost in that “other” world. Besides it’s always fun to scare yourself a little bit. 🙂

  16. WELL…I don’t go all out like you do, Cynthia! I do love the trick-or-treaters. We had more than 200 last year! We don’t have kids but I love to see the little monsters come to our door, in their cute/scary/silly costumes. It’s not as cute later in the evening when they’re teenagers, not in costume, carrying pillowcases…but earlier in the night when it’s the little munchkins, I’m just enchanted!

  17. I celebrated Halloween for the first time two years ago when I came to the US. It was just so fun dressing up and people watching as we went trick-or-treating.

I’m looking forward to seeing the elaborated decors from the houses in the neighborhood.

  18. I love the decorations! I have a huge front window that I decorate to within an inch of it’s life. With each passing year I collect more coordinated supplies. This year we will have a skeleton in the window keeping watch over our graveyard (complete with spooky fence and lighting!). jepebATverizonDOTnet

  19. Okay I love dressing up for Halloween even though I am 36. It’s as much fun as the kiddies! LOL.

  22. ssweaver, that candy lures me in…

Vanessa, I live for those scary movie marathons. Such fun! Even if I do get uber scared and have to triple check my locks.

Yay, wickster! Sounds like we feel the same way!

  23. What about you? Do you enjoy the spooky times? What’s your favorite part of Halloween?
I love the spooky times. My favorite part of Halloween is all of it. Really, seeing the little kids trick or treating is always a blast, checking out the decorations in the neighborhood, and anticipating the pumpkin pie with whipped cream I’m going to have the next day for my birthday is all fun.

  24. I love Halloween! My favorite parts have got to be all the scary movies they play during October and dressing my kids up to go trick-or-treating. Love watching them enjoy themselves! I have 2 boys & now I’m about to have an October baby & thankfully she’ll be born before Halloween so I FINALLY have a little girl I get to dress up! So excited!!!!

  25. I love Halloween + the decorations + the candy! I love seeing people in costumes, especially the adorable trick-or-treaters. Although I watch horror movies all the time, I really enjoy the Halloween themed ones like Trick ‘r Treat during October. This year, I think I might go to Salem, MA for Halloween 🙂

  26. I enjoy those safe scares, too, powerse!

Allison, good friends always = more fun!

  27. SydLion, I always enjoy the spookiness much more when I am with a pack of friends! Safety in numbers!

Barbara, you now have me craving some yummy pie!

Congratulations on your October baby, Veronica!

  28. States of Decay, I’ve heard that Salem is awesome. I’m so jealous! Hope you have a great time.

Movies and treats go hand in hand, Timitra!

I love to stay in the Halloween mood, too, Gabrielle. More fun that way!

  29. I have always liked Halloween. I always watch the scary movie fest that they do on tv. I am enjoying it more now that I have a kid to take trick or treating.

  30. I have always love Halloween and all things spooky 😀 My favorite part (other than the chocolate, lol) would be having a scary movie marathon. I grew up watching all the Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, etc and still love a good, scary movie.

  31. My favorite part of Halloween is seeing all the little kids in costume. I also though love the movies – 31 Days to Halloween make a great movie month. And I like to read spooky stories then as well.

  32. Halloween is an all out,no holds barred deal with my family. My sister and I are Wiccans,o even tho it means something different to us,we still enjoy the night thru the eyes of our guests and the little kids. We ALWAYS decorate to the nines, have a caramel apple dipping station for the kids (with parents permission,of course),offer hot apple cider and cocoa to the adults. People are usually waiting for us to open the garage! This year we are going to put on a skit with a cauldron and recite Double,Double Toil and Trouble in complete costume!

  33. I love spooky times Halloween is one of my favoreite times of year the scary movies ,the costumes and the feeling of you never know whats running around out there in the dark.

  34. Well, my dad is a HUGE Halloween fan, so he goes all out with decorating. He even makes his own decorations and animated figures, etc. He’s a hardcore Halloween junkie and I love seeing what he comes up with each year, and I love decorating and building with him.

  35. I do enjoy some of the spooky times of Halloween and my favorite part is the haunted house that a friend of ours puts on every year that raises money to give to the Make a Wish foundation.

  36. Growing up I never enjoyed Halloween. Hated dressing up, hated being scared and wasn’t even a fan of trick-or-treating. Now that I have a child I’m looking forward to him (and future kid(s)) growing up and doing all the stuff with them. Decorating the house, choosing their costumes, taking them TorTing. Still don’t like being scared, but all the rest sounds fun with kids.

I love that you have to write a paranormal story during October.

Thanks for the chance to win!

I love Halloween as well. My favorite holiday…yes it even trumps X-mas! I love the holiday to be able to come crawling out of my skin and be something I only WISH I could be. I love being scared out of my skin and the like. I like to decorate outside the front door and try and scare away the kids – keep the candy for myself! LOL

Thanks for sharing about your traditions!

    ~Poison

P.S – a certain scene in Angel Betrayed did scare the crap out of me! 😉

  39. I have 3 kids so I love getting their costumes and going trick or treating. My kids even complain they are tired and want to go home but I am like no not yet. There are more houses.

    best wishes, Linda ox

  42. I love Halloween, I used to love bring the kids out and seeing what everyone was dressed up as. We would go to the house 4 down from us where the guy hid in the bushes and jumped out at the kids my kids knew this and insisted on going there and still jumped when he jumped out. Great holiday.
