ARC Review + Tour: Confess by Colleen Hoover

You know when you love an author’s writing because their books have been epic before that you just hold them to a higher standard than usual?  That is the case with me and Colleen Hoover.  So while I enjoyed CONFESS and in other circumstances it would’ve been much better probably for me, I just don’t think it holds to the standard I’ve set for her.  And I think a lot of that was the fact that I couldn’t fully connect.

Our heroine, Auburn Reed, has had a rough start in life.  From early on we see her suffering when her boyfriend at the time is fighting a losing battle against a disease and dies.  I’ll admit I was fully connected to her then.  At some point between that point and her current situation she lost a bit of my attention though.  By letting situations and people control her.  By not having it in her to fight for the right thing.

Owen Gentry on the other hand is a great hero.  Just a bit damaged by life, but still in control of his future.  And having the sweetest connection to Auburn, which we learn about at the end of the book and brought tears to my eyes.  I think Owen is going to become a lot of readers newest book boyfriend.  With just enough bad boy in him to spice things up, but a good guy at heart.  I can even look past the fact that his initials are OMG and that is used as a joke in the book more than once.

What I loved?  The concept of a painting inspired by people’s confessions.  Such a cool idea!  I really enjoyed the artistic aspect of this and now it just makes me seek someone that does this and that could paint some for me. 🙂

The romance between Owen and Auburn is sweet and has some sexy moments.  I was at times drawn in and at times just going through the pages waiting for the next thing to happen.  So it read a bit like a rollercoaster for me as far as my interest in the story.  It would lose me, then pull me back, lose me again, get me glued to the pages again.

I feel like the ending was good but there was one part I wasn’t sold on and that is the ease with which the subject of addiction recovery is handled.  I think just saying everything is fine now wasn’t believable enough for me, where I would’ve liked to see talk about steps there were taken.  One good person coming into someone’s live won’t magically make that issue go away.
