“Shiloh Walker can definitely write a good suspenseful book, and this was that!” ~Under the Covers
I first discovered this series while reading the anthology HOT IN HANDCUFFS last year and was immediately drawn to it because of the psychic/paranormal element that adds just a touch of different.
Shiloh Walker can definitely write a good suspenseful book, and this was that! With the help of some psychic abilities, this particular division of the FBI is solving impossible cases. In this case, we are dealing with human trafficking and a bad guy who has no remorse in using, selling or killing.
My favorite thing, as I often say with Shiloh’s books, was the bad guy. Another completely crazy, creep that I couldn’t wait to see brought to justice. I loved seeing different aspects of him and learning to hate him for different reasons. Sounds mean. See the heroine of this book, Dru, has been working undercover for two years to bring this guy down. To get close, she’s been posing as his girlfriend and now fiance. To see the extent of how much he was able to break her down added another level of hate for the bad guy.
The case evolution is engaging and kept me interested the whole time. However, I did have times when I lost some of my interest. And those times were the actual connection between the H/h, the romance. This didn’t start clicking in for me as far as the romance went until close to the end. And I’m not even talking about figuring out the fact that there’s a subplot of reincarnation. I actually happen to find that very intriguing and I was excited when the possibility was first mentioned in the book. It brought back memories of when I was a kid and read ONLY LOVE IS REAL by Brian Weiss and how enthralled that story had me that I finished it in almost one sitting.
In the end, this was a great story. It was creepy when it had to be, scary when it was necessary and heartbreaking at times. And at the end, there is healing.
