I needed a dose of angst but realized that this book isn’t very dark or angsty at all.  ~ Under the Covers

As the first in a brand new New Adult series by Elyssa Patrick, we have a superstar heroine who tries to fight her attraction to the good guy, Caleb Fox. Hailey leaves Hollywood for college and this is where the story starts.

What drew me to this novel was the fact that it was a NA. I needed a dose of angst but realized that this book isn’t very dark or angsty at all. I didn’t think Hailey’s problem was very big and therefore, I was a little disappointed in that.

Along the same lines, Hailey’s personality faltered a little for me. I couldn’t understand why she thought she couldn’t be with Caleb at first. She was supposed to have a big persona because of her celebrity status, but I couldn’t find that star quality in her. Her character felt very subdued and while I didn’t hate her, I also didn’t find her particularly interesting either. Hailey didn’t have very much to complain about but she did it constantly anyways. I don’t know if the author meant for that to be the angst, but I don’t think it done well enough. As a result, I don’t think I really connected with her character as much as I thought.

I am looking for the presence of good guy heroes in New Adult. Caleb is one of those guys. There are a lot of musicians/rockstar books out there, but they are usually the sexy, brooding hero. This time, we have a great hero who helps Hailey discover who she is. Caleb turned out to be one of my favorite characters in the book. The other character I liked turned out to be Daphne. I found her interesting and I think I’d like to see more of her. I might be persuaded to check out the next book in the series if I can get a little more angst.
