Some Mistakes Were Made has quickly become one of my favorite contemporary romance reads of all time!

I’m a big believer in the universe bringing you the book you’re meant to read at exactly when you’re meant to read it, and I am so glad that the universe put Kristin Dwyer’s debut on my radar. Some Mistakes Were Made is a masterpiece of a young adult contemporary romance novel that explores such important and relatable themes. What it’s like to be in love for the first time, what it’s like to have your first heartbreak, and what it’s like to want to belong. Make sure you have some tissues and chocolate on hand before you start, cause readers are in for a whirlwind of emotions with this one.
Ms. Dwyer’s imagery and prose are beautiful and immersive – she painted a picture for readers without it seeming like she was even really trying. Take for example, the start of an emotional scene in the story. “There isn’t a difference between a sunrise and a sunset, really. The same colors paint the sky….The problem with the sky is that sometimes you can’t tell which is the beginning and which is the end.” This description paints the picture and sets the mood for the scene in just a couple of lines. I loved it, and I was left hungry for more. I was also very impressed by Easton’s poems in the book. It’s one thing to write a story, it’s another thing to capture the lyrical quality that makes poems so special. My favorite poem is the one that was published, and that Tucker reads at their mom’s birthday party. You’ll have to read the book to find out what it says – I don’t want to risk spoiling it for you, because the moment is that good.
Ellis is so relatable and her journey is heart wrenching. My emotions were a mess after this book, and it’s mainly because of her. I related to her character more than I can put into words, and I was invested after the very first chapter. I wanted her to get a happily ever after ending and I was desperate to see her finally find a place she felt like she belonged. Ellis’ relationship with Easton especially tugged at my heartstrings – who doesn’t relate to all the emotions that come with your first love and first heartbreak?
On a side note, I’d like to know where the sign-up is to be adopted by the Albrey’s, because I absolutely adore Mama Sandry. She’s quickly become one of my favorite book moms, along with Sally Jackson from Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Harry Potter’s Mrs. Weasley. Sandry just radiates a maternal warmth that one can’t help but be drawn to. It was super cute how the Albrey brothers absorbed Ellis into their sibling dynamic, and how they were the ones to teach her how to do things like drive (as opposed to Sandry, Ben or Ellis’ birth parents).
Altogether, Some Mistakes Were Made has quickly become one of my favorite contemporary romance reads of all time! Ms. Dwyer has earned herself a fan for life in me after reading her debut. I’m eagerly awaiting news of her next release, as I’m pretty much going to buy it no matter what. Do yourself a favor and go pick up Some Mistakes Were Made today!
