ARC Review: Perfectly Damaged by E.L Montes

PERFECTLY DAMAGED turned out to be a pleasant read. ~ Under the Covers

I was most drawn to this book because of the blurb. When I learned that the book was about a heroine who had schizoaffective disorder, I knew this was right up my alley. I have a background in Psychology so I was most interested to see how E.L. Montes was going to pull this off. These types of characters are difficult to write because they are trouble and often misunderstood. I wanted to see how she was going to handle that side of her character while also making her likeable.

To be honest, I had a hard time liking heroine, Jenna. She comes across as very standoffish to everyone including her therapist, who I didn’t think tried to pressure her into anything that wasn’t good for her. Her relationship with her family is a little strained. Sometimes they get along, other times they don’t.

When Jenna first meets Logan, he has just “saved her life” and she bursts out with a lot of accusations. Logan doesn’t find it attractive and says something back. However, in an attempt to make someone jealous, Jenna asks Logan to kiss her and that’s when she wonders if she really hates this guy or not.

Logan and Jenna have chemistry, but they also start with not liking it each other much in the beginning. For this reason, I found the attraction to be superficial. Logan’s POV often comes across as a player and I couldn’t invest in him a lot.

Now a little more on the schizoaffective side of the story because that was what I was most interested in with this story. For the most part, I thought Montes handled it okay. I especially liked the hallucinations with her sister. Those turned out to be very interested. However, like I said, Jenna is hard to understand sometimes. I wondered if it was strictly a case of the disorder that prevented me from fully investing in her character. However, I found that I felt the same with Logan’s character as well. Something just didn’t click.

In the end, PERFECTLY DAMAGED turned out to be a pleasant read, exploring the depths of a psychological disorder.
