What starts off as awkward and fumbling soon turns into a romance that is imbibed with trust and understanding. ~ Under the Covers

Marie Sexton  is one of the premier authors of the genre and she showcases exactly why with NEVER A HERO!!

Owen Meade has become one of my favorite Sexton characters. Owen is gay, has a stutter and is ashamed of his congenitally amputated arm, which is why he lives like a hermit in Tucker Springs.

It isn’t until the moving in of a neighbour that Owen starts coming out of his shell. There’s something about Nick Reynolds, the veterinarian that makes Owen feel comfortable and excited at the same time. When Nick introduces himself as Owen’s new neighbour and asks if he would like to join him for a bar, Owen jumps at the chance to get to know him.

What starts off as awkward and fumbling soon turns into a romance that is imbibed with trust and understanding. Nick doesn’t treat Owen differently because of his stutter or his stump. Having a sister with the same congenitally amputated arm helps him understand a bit of what Owen is going through. Sexton moves this story from cute and sweet to heartfelt and passionate within a second. It’s lovely and refreshing to see someone care for Owen on a level that goes deeper than ever before. In a way, I see Nick has a balm for Owen’s soul. After everything he has experienced at the hands of his mother, Owen has learned to hide himself. Being with Nick allows Owen to emerge and embrace exactly who he is without wishing he was “whole”. In Nick’s eyes, I think he sees Owen to be more of a man than he is.

Nick’s sister is a breath of fresh air. She seems like the exact opposite of Owen. It’s enlightening for Owen to see such fire and spirit in someone so little. What’s more beautiful is seeing Owen understand and embrace himself in the same way.

Though there is some angst that Sexton is known for, I wouldn’t say it’s heavy on it. There’s a great balance between the angst and the happiness that it feels like a well-rounded read. Sexton is always a must- read and NEVER A HERO could be my favorite of the Tucker Springs series so far!
