ARC Review: Meant to be Immortal by Lynsay Sands

In the 32nd novel set in her world of immortals, Lynsay Sands delivers a plot both new and familiar for fans of her long-running series. Macon “Mac” Argeneau just moved to Canada in search of a quiet place to do his research. But his first day in his new house ends in a blaze as the house goes up in smoke with him trapped inside. Fans of the series will know that flames are a sure-fire way to kill an immortal; luckily, the local fire department arrives in time with a very interesting investigator in tow, waking up feelings that Mac hasn’t felt in years. CJ Cummings was only in town to interview the local police department, but before she can get settled she’s sent to help out an arson case – one with a very nice looking, if strange, victim. At first, CJ just wants to do her job and leave Mac to the local authorities. But when another attack happens, CJ is forced to stay a while longer, giving Mac time to woo and claim CJ as his life mate before she walks out of his life for good.

After 30+ novels in the Argeneau series, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Lynsay Sands can continuously come up with new scenarios while seamlessly interweaving new and past characters into her immortal world. In Meant to Be Immortal the male protagonist may be new to us, but Mac has direct ties to several fan favorite characters that readers will be delighted to see make return appearances. Sands also found yet another way for life mates to stumble into each other’s paths, which, surprisingly, hasn’t gotten monotonous after thirty iterations. Of course, as in any romance, Mac and CJ have their problems to work through and there is internal and external conflict galore throughout the novel.

Readers can expect the same familiar formula they’ve seen in the previous Argeneau books: immortal and mortal meet, immortal realizes they’re life mates, one of them (or both) resists, both mortal and immortal end up happily together. Also not missing from Meant to Be Immortal is Lynsay Sands’ usual wit and humor; even in the most dire of circumstances her characters find a way to inject humor or sarcasm into the scene.

The Argeneau series is full of stories that combine the paranormal with romance and action, and Meant to Be Immortal is no different. Having prior knowledge of the series is recommended; while previous books always gave a full immortal history lesson, new readers to the series may be confused by the limited background provided in this book. Long-time fans of the Argeneau series will enjoy meeting new characters, revisiting past ones, and seeing series plotlines progress. And, as in any of her books, Sands knows how to write a steamy scene that will keep readers turning the page. Meant to Be Immortal was a great paranormal romance read, but should definitely not be attempted as a standalone.
