“Luminous did have strong Shadow of Bone vibes–but in a different, unique context. So if you are still reeling from the new Netflix series, this book is definitely for you!”

“There was something about the way he looked at me, so unruffled despite my obvious terror, that made my skin crawl. I could see it now, how he used his handsome face and soothing words to draw people in, as dangerously deceptive as a poisonous flower.”
Mara Rutherford, the author of Crown of Coral and Pearl, has given us a new fantasy with witches, warlocks, and forbidden magic.
Lord Darius, the king’s warlock, hunts down mages in order to take their power for his own. He has special hounds that can hunt down mages and destroy them. Liora, a young girl, with glowing skin like a star, has lived her life in hiding to escape Lord Darius’s grasp.
Liora is as curious of her power as she is afraid; so far the only manifestation of it has been her luminous skin. Her father warns her that it can be dangerous and deadly–best left unexplored. The only place Liora is only allowed out to quickly go to town to buy materials needed for her sew and make clothes. While out with her sisters they learn that Lord Darius is near, leaving them exposed and in danger. Margana, the town witch, tries her best to cover Liora’s magic with her own but it doesn’t go completely unperceived. Lord Darius’s interest piqued can only lead to trouble.
This book usurps Crown of Coral and Pearl. It has an immersive world that is easy to dive into without extensive history or backstory. Liora is a strong main character who is not gullible and lovesick but uses her love for others to make her stronger. You get to see her grow and self-actualize throughout the book which is incredible. Her relationship with Evran (her childhood best friend) and her curiosity of Lord Darius was so fun to explore. I secretly, and toxicly, wanted so much more of Darius, the Darkling of Luminous.
Luminous did have strong Shadow of Bone vibes–but in a different, unique context. So if you are still reeling from the new Netflix series, this book is definitely for you! Lord Darius reminded me of the Darkling and I could see Evran as Mal. I love how illuminating Liora’s powers are to her and others. This book is pretty tame with low *spice* factors but it had great characters and fantastic worldbuilding. Highly recommend this book!
